The Cuban men's volleyball team is set to conclude its training in Havana before heading to Moncton, Canada. There, they will compete in the Norceca Men's Continental Championship 2026, a dual-qualifying event offering three spots for the 2027 World Championship and a regional berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

This championship will unfold at the Avenir Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick, from September 11 to 19.

According to JIT, Cuba finds itself in Group A alongside the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and the United States. Meanwhile, Group B features Puerto Rico, Mexico, Curacao, and host nation Canada.

The tournament format dictates that group winners advance directly to the semifinals, while those finishing second and third will cross paths in the quarterfinals.

A unique aspect of the Olympic qualification is that the United States automatically secures participation in Los Angeles 2028 as the host nation. Thus, if they finish among the top four, which is expected, their spot will be offered to the fifth-place team overall.

Under the guidance of Jesús Cruz, the Cuban team enters the competition bolstered by a successful European tour. They played eight matches across Russia and Italy, securing four consecutive wins towards the end.

In Russia, the Cubans split victories with Dinamo LO in Sosnovy Bor and later joined a tournament in Ufa, defeating Russia and Belarus but losing to Iran.

The Italian leg proved more fruitful, with victories against Germany (3-2) in Reggio Calabria, the Italian hosts (3-2), and concluding with a 3-1 win over Brazil in Messina, with set scores of 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18.

The men's tournament follows the successful performance of the Cuban women's team, which secured third place in their Norceca Continental Championship.

In contrast, the men's team ended the 2026 Nations League in 16th place out of 18, with only three wins in twelve games, highlighting the significant challenge they face in Moncton.

Cuba has not qualified for the men's volleyball Olympic event since the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. The Moncton tournament stands as the primary regional chance to end this decade-long absence from the prestigious Olympic stage.
