The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported at 8:00 a.m. this Thursday that the system, known as Invest AL96, is currently positioned about halfway between Africa and the Windward Islands. It exhibited improved organization overnight.
The formation chance has now climbed to 90% for both the next 48 hours and the upcoming week, prompting the NHC to categorize the development possibility as high.
"Should current trends persist, advisories regarding a short-lived tropical storm may commence later today," stated the American agency.
However, the window for strengthening appears to be brief. The NHC cautioned that starting Friday, hostile environmental conditions are expected to hinder further development.
In a meteorological discussion released on the same day, experts noted that the showers and thunderstorms linked to the low-pressure area became better organized overnight.
According to this report, the system was situated several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. If it continues its progression, the NHC might start issuing advisories for a tropical depression or tropical storm later today.
Should it reach tropical storm strength, it would be named Dolly, the next designation on the Atlantic list for 2026. So far this season, Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal are the named systems.
The NHC also anticipates the system will bring increased winds and waves to parts of the tropical Atlantic over the weekend, although no impact trajectory for Cuba has been issued at this time.
