Amber Uhler, representing Michigan in the Miss USA 2026 pageant, brings a narrative that transcends the runway. Just five years ago, she weighed nearly 300 pounds, and doctors warned her she was "headed for an early grave." Now, at 41, she is the oldest contestant in this prestigious competition.
According to an exclusive feature in People magazine, Uhler's turning point came in 2021. As a mother of three, she attended a routine medical check-up and heard life-altering words: "You are morbidly obese, prediabetic, on track for an early death, and likely won’t live to see your kids graduate high school."
That same weekend, while at a trampoline park with her children, she fell into a foam pit and got stuck. A group of strong men attempted to form a human chain to pull her out, but they failed. The situation nearly required a call to the fire department.
“I had never felt so humiliated in my life,” Uhler confessed. Instead of despairing, she penned an "impossible" goal: to compete in a beauty pageant.
What ensued was a rigorous three-and-half-year journey involving the Jenny Craig diet and regular exercise, eschewing modern medication like Ozempic. The outcome was a remarkable 170-pound weight loss, leading her to win Mrs. Florida Universe in 2024 and then Mrs. Universe USA in 2025.
The Pageant Dream
Yet, the competition she always dreamed of was Miss USA. "The pageant that I always held in my heart was Miss USA, with all its glamour, sparkle, and being on television," she expressed.
In July 2026, Uhler was crowned Miss Michigan USA through an open casting call, and this Thursday she competes in the 75th Miss USA edition, held at Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center.
Embracing Confidence and Support
Despite competing against women in their twenties, Uhler has been pleasantly surprised by the experience. "My confidence is soaring here at Miss USA, which is the opposite of what I expected," she admitted. "I thought I'd feel insecure among the younger contestants, but they have all embraced me."
Even the youngest participants have become her biggest supporters. "The teenage contestants are my biggest fans and cheerleaders, and they cheer me on so much," she shared, laughing.
Beyond the Scale
At 41, Uhler aims to become the oldest Miss USA in history and the first mother to win the title. "I know I'm crazy," she jokes. "I signed up to be on TV in a bikini after losing 170 pounds."
However, for her, the journey has never been about the weight scale. "This path isn't just about a number. It's about taking back my life, believing in miracles, and proving no dream is too big when you're unwilling to give up," she wrote on her Instagram.
“This is the pageant I always dreamed of being part of, and achieving it is simply my Cinderella story,” Uhler concluded.
