Container Loaded with Food and Medicine Arrives in Santiago de Cuba to Aid Over 400 Vulnerable Individuals

A shipment packed with essential food and medicine has arrived in Santiago de Cuba, aimed at supporting assistance programs for more than 400 vulnerable individuals, including religious soup kitchens, elderly people living alone, those with chronic illnesses, and individuals with disabilities.

This Wednesday, the Community of Sant’Egidio in Santiago de Cuba announced the arrival of the container, which is the result of their efforts to secure humanitarian aid amidst what they described as an "extremely complex" socioeconomic situation on the island.

"Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Community of Sant’Egidio, a crucial container filled with humanitarian aid has reached Santiago de Cuba, providing food and medicine for the region’s most vulnerable families," the organization stated.

The supplies will benefit diocesan soup kitchens and other religious institutions, as well as elderly individuals living by themselves, people with chronic health conditions, and citizens with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Young Volunteers Step Up to Aid Delivery

Youths associated with the community played a key role in the unloading of the container, as noted by Sant’Egidio, who praised their solidarity as they "worked shoulder to shoulder" to transport the tons of food and medicine, showcasing camaraderie in the face of the population's hardships.

The organization highlighted that bringing the container to Cuba was "a significant logistical challenge" due to the current complexities surrounding maritime transport to the island.

These challenges were previously explained in June by Giovanni Impagliazzo, Sant’Egidio’s Central America representative. In an interview shared by El Observador de la Actualidad, based on a Vatican News publication, he stated that very few shipping agencies still operate routes to Cuba, and even the dispatch and movement of containers have become difficult due to the lack of fuel.

Humanitarian Aid Continues Amid Crisis

The aid is part of a broader humanitarian effort undertaken by Sant’Egidio over recent months. On May 9, a first container carrying over 22,000 kilograms of rice and flour arrived in Havana, as a result of a fundraising campaign driven by the organization’s communities across different countries.

Following that, on May 15, another shipment departed from the Italian port of Genoa headed for Cuba, containing medications collected in Italy, particularly in Rome and Milan, with assistance from the Pharmaceutical Bank. Impagliazzo estimated the commercial value of this pharmaceutical aid at approximately 700,000 euros, including medicines beneficial for the elderly, products for hypertension, ointments for scabies, and lice shampoo.

The resources were designated for the organization’s shelters and dining facilities. Sant’Egidio maintains 12 centers in Cuba and has intensified its assistance efforts in response to the energy crisis, food and medicine shortages, and challenges accessing basic services.

In Santiago de Cuba, the organization collaborates with Church structures to assist the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. This eastern province has received several humanitarian shipments from abroad during 2023.

In February, a ship carrying aid from the United States reached the Santiago port with food and hygiene products for families impacted by Hurricane Melissa. In April, five more aid containers from the United States were unloaded in Santiago de Cuba, containing food, hygiene modules, and home goods for vulnerable families in multiple dioceses in the eastern part of the country.

That same month, Spain began distributing humanitarian aid to approximately 5,000 people in Santiago de Cuba, providing 1,000 kits filled with food and hygiene products.
