The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has shed light on the detention of acclaimed Cuban percussionist Degnis Nelson Bofill Miranda, who was taken into custody on August 19 at Miami International Airport upon returning from New York.
ICE, in a statement referenced by CBS News Miami, stated that Bofill, age 39, "entered the United States legally on April 15, 2023, but failed to comply with the terms of his admission and is now in violation of immigration law."
The agency labeled him an "illegal immigrant from Cuba" and assured that he "will receive due process." They also emphasized their ongoing commitment to enforcing the immigration priorities set by the Trump administration, which include detaining and deporting individuals in the country unlawfully.
ICE's explanation conflicts with the account given by Mara Delgado, Bofill's wife, who claims that Bofill entered legally with a visa and has a pending asylum application that had not yet reached the initial interview stage.
"He landed at Miami airport, coming from New York, and they were waiting for him there," Delgado told CBS News Miami.
A Prominent Musical Career Interrupted
Bofill was returning from participating in the Latin Alternative Music Conference and a performance at the Pocket Jazz Club in Midtown Manhattan when he was detained.
After spending several days at ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in Miramar, he was moved to the Krome North Processing Center in Miami-Dade, where he remains detained.
His wife has described the detention conditions as "terrible and designed to break the spirit of the detainees" and fears the process might end with her husband's deportation.
"I'm worried about him being deported because I don't know when I'll see him again," she confessed. The couple met in Cuba and married in 2023, the same year Bofill arrived in the United States.

Bofill is one of the most recognized Cuban percussionists of his generation. He won the 2022 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album for his contribution to "Ancestros Sinfónico" by Síntesis, X Alfonso, and Eme Alfonso.
As the founder of the Afro-Cuban jazz group Golpes Libres, he has collaborated with musicians like Roberto Fonseca and Arturo O'Farrill, contributed to over 28 albums, and since January 2025, has been part of the voting body of the Latin Recording Academy.
His journey began far from the glamorous music scenes. Born in Manzanillo in 1987, he studied at the José María Ochoa Conservatory in Holguín, recalling that for years he lacked the means to purchase his own instruments.
"I woke up every day at 6 a.m. for three years to reserve the only xylophone in the school," he shared in a 2024 interview.
Community Support and Legal Battle
In response to his detention, Delgado launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover his legal defense costs. The initiative, aiming to raise $60,000, had garnered over $51,700 from more than 600 supporters as of this Tuesday.
Bofill's arrest came just four days after the detention of Cuban pianist Andy García Palacios from Miami's Hermanos García, at Los Angeles International Airport.
These incidents occur amid a surge in ICE arrests at U.S. airports, reflecting the Trump administration's tougher stance on immigration policy.
While Bofill's immigration status remains uncertain, Delgado's primary goal is to secure his release from Krome.
"My husband is one of the finest Cuban musicians of his generation. I can't imagine a community that wouldn't want him to be part of it," she stated.
