An 18-year-old Cuban man is among four individuals apprehended in connection with the murder of Marvin Oporta García, a legal refugee of the same age who was fatally shot multiple times in a Jacksonville park in Florida.
The tragic incident took place on July 16 at Jacksonville Drew Park, located near Barnes Road. Responding officers discovered Oporta García with several gunshot wounds, and he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries before medical help could be administered, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO).
After an extensive investigation, the Homicide Unit identified four suspects: Daniel Ramírez Mato, an 18-year-old Cuban; José Hernández Bermúdez, a 16-year-old Nicaraguan; Kleber Martínez, a 17-year-old Honduran; and Russell Oliva Reyes, a 21-year-old Honduran woman.
Authorities reported that none of the four had legal immigration status in the United States at the time of their arrest, while the victim was legally present in the country as a refugee.
Ramírez Mato, Hernández Bermúdez, and Martínez were taken into custody on August 15, with Oliva Reyes being arrested the following day. All four suspects are currently held in Duval County Jail.

The case has also sparked immigration concerns. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued immigration detainers for the Cuban suspect, Ramírez Mato, and Oliva Reyes.
These detainers request local authorities to notify ICE of their release and hold them temporarily so the agency can take over their immigration cases.
