The Our Lady of Charity Parish in Sancti Spíritus, recognized as the first church built in tribute to Cuba's Patroness outside Santiago de Cuba, is set to commemorate its 300th anniversary with a Jubilee Year. This significant event is scheduled to commence on August 30 and will continue through September 2027.
Father Yoan Ernesto Bonet Espino announced this celebration on Sunday in a letter addressed to the faithful of Sancti Spíritus, highlighting the theme "300 Years of Charity: Faith that Illuminates and Hope that Endures."
"I reach out to you with immense joy to announce and invite you to partake in the celebration of the three centuries of our Parish of Our Lady of Charity in Sancti Spíritus with true spirit of faith and hope," he expressed.
This Jubilee Year has been granted by Monsignor Arturo González Amador, the Bishop of the Diocese of Santa Clara and the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba.
The church's origins date back to 1717 when priest Silvestre Alonso Muñoz initiated the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Charity using his personal resources. The structure opened for worship in 1727, becoming the second religious building in Cuba dedicated to the Virgin of Charity, following the sanctuary in El Cobre.
In 1853, the chapel was elevated to the status of a parish church and has been under the administration of the Discalced Carmelites since 1909.
"This celebration marks not only a temporal milestone but also a testament to the centuries of faith, dedication, and hard work of countless souls who came before us," Father Bonet emphasized.
The anniversary also aligns with the 110th year since the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre was declared the Patroness of Cuba. This title was bestowed in 1916 by Pope Benedict XV at the request of veterans from the Liberation Army.
The Jubilee Year will kick off on Sunday, August 30, just days before the feast of the Virgin of Charity, celebrated annually on September 8, and will conclude on September 9, 2027.
"It will be a special time of grace, a chance to renew our faith, give thanks for the blessings received, and look forward to the future with hope," the parish priest affirmed.
