Two Cuban experts have expressed skepticism over the past weekend regarding the claim that an object discovered on Saturday in the municipality of Pilón, Granma province, is a meteorite. They propose entirely terrestrial explanations for the enigmatic fragment that has sparked a wave of speculation across social media.

The buzz began on the morning of Saturday, August 22, when a group of young people stumbled upon a dark, rough, and smoking object approximately 50 meters from the Purgatorio River bridge. Eyewitnesses reported the fragment, described as almond-sized, bounced three times upon impact, emitted gases with a strong odor, and even scorched the surrounding vegetation. Local authorities secured the object under the MININT's custody and transported it to Bayamo for further examination. Meanwhile, Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service, suggested it could be a "probable meteorite fall" and advised preserving the site undisturbed.

Later that afternoon, Dr. Manuel Iturralde Vinent, a geologist and Senior Researcher at the Cuban Academy of Sciences, told the magazine Juventud Técnica that the material "seems to be circum-terrestrial technological debris from the atmosphere."

Technical Reasons Behind Skepticism

Iturralde Vinent cited four technical reasons to discount the object's extraterrestrial origin: "It lacks a fusion crust... It's highly porous... The spherical structure with voids isn't typical of space... No crater exists, which for fragments of that size, could have a few centimeters in diameter and depth."

A fusion crust is a thin layer, typically dark and sometimes glassy, that forms on many meteorites' surfaces due to intense heating and ablation during atmospheric entry. While its presence is a key indicator of a meteorite, its absence doesn't rule out an extraterrestrial origin, as the crust might be lost post-fall due to fragmentation, erosion, or weathering.

Alternative Explanations

In parallel, expert Yasmani Ceballos Izquierdo offered an extensive clarification on Facebook, asserting that "the visible characteristics of the object don't align with those usually associated with meteorites." He noted that the agglomerated fragment structure, bound by a dark and shiny phase, "is more consistent with terrestrial materials like industrial slag, bituminous/asphaltic material, or other residues subjected to high temperatures."

Ceballos also dismantled a key argument supporting the meteorite hypothesis among witnesses: the object's appearance of being red and smoking. "It's a myth that meteorites are found hot," he wrote. "During atmospheric entry, the surface heats up and undergoes ablation, but the object decelerates and ceases to be incandescent before reaching the ground." Consequently, reports of a strong odor, smoke, and burnt vegetation "weaken, rather than reinforce, the meteorite interpretation."

The expert further ruled out the possibility of the object being reentering space debris, stating that "space debris reentries are well-monitored, even online, and no orbital object with a terminal trajectory crossing Pilón is observed on those platforms." He suggested that the fragment might be asphalt or bituminous material which, when heated, can emit smoke, produce a strong odor, and scorch vegetation.

Continuing Investigations

Had it been confirmed as a meteorite, it would have marked the sixth scientifically recognized case in Cuba. The five acknowledged instances to date include: Las Canas (1844), Bacuranao (1974), Santa Isabel de las Lajas (1994), Viñales (2019), and Ramón de las Yaguas, in Santiago de Cuba (2021). A more recent case, a possible fall in Matanzas in November 2024, also remained unconfirmed due to a lack of terrestrial fragments.

Ceballos summarized the current understanding of the case with a cautionary note: "What we know so far is: there is substantial evidence of a real object on the ground; no public instrumental evidence has been located so far of a fireball, atmospheric trajectory, or impact from space."

Specialists from CITMA, along with geologists and experts from CENAIS, are continuing their analysis of the sample transported to Bayamo.
