A 32-year-old Cuban man is facing charges for the murder of another Cuban, aged 38, who succumbed to stab wounds following an attack on Thursday night in the Cordón neighborhood of Montevideo.

The incident unfolded at the intersection of Uruguay Avenue and Vázquez, where the victim was assaulted with a knife while being chased by multiple individuals, as reported by Uruguayan media outlet Subrayado.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, the victim managed to seek shelter in a nearby store. There, he revealed that he had been threatened and attacked during the pursuit.

He was transported in critical condition to Maciel Hospital, where he underwent surgery but ultimately did not survive.

Following investigations, police apprehended one of his fellow countrymen, who has since been placed at the disposal of the Prosecutor's Office. The court has ruled that he remain in custody until February 17, 2027, as the investigation continues.

The case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Homicide Department of the Complex Events Directorate and the 1st Shift Homicide Prosecutor's Office. So far, authorities have not disclosed the motive for the crime nor the identities of the victim and the suspect.

This homicide is among several violent incidents that have recently affected the Cuban community in Montevideo. In April, José Eduardo Cuéllar Arteaga, a 31-year-old Cuban delivery driver, was shot dead during an attempted robbery of his motorcycle.

Earlier in August, another Cuban, aged 28, was stabbed to death in a boarding house in the Paso de la Arena neighborhood following an argument with a Venezuelan neighbor.

Uruguay has increasingly become a destination for the rising Cuban emigration in South America. By 2025, more than 22,000 Cubans had entered the country, nearly triple the number from the previous year.
