Osmar González Peña, a symbol of determination and grit in Tampa, is now able to walk without crutches. Known for delivering Amazon packages with just one leg, Osmar's journey took a transformative turn thanks to a smart knee prosthesis donated by the Cuban community.
This life-changing prosthetic was funded by an outpouring of support, with the Cuban diaspora raising over $35,000 in merely three months.
"Walking with crutches is nothing like the freedom of walking unaided," he shared with Univision 23 Miami's journalist, Javier Díaz.
Osmar's story gained traction last October when content creator José Polanco shared videos of him making deliveries on one leg. Besides delivering for Amazon, Osmar also worked an eight-hour shift as an ironer at a laundry.
Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Osmar lost his leg in a traffic accident at the tender age of three. In 2022, he immigrated to the United States, crossing the southern border on crutches and securing an I-220A immigration document.
Community Effort: A Beacon of Hope
As Osmar's story spread, a GoFundMe campaign titled "Help Me Get My Prosthesis" was launched. Although it started slowly, momentum built up over time. By December 2025, the campaign had raised $22,400 toward a $50,000 goal, and by January 2026, the total surpassed $36,000, allowing Osmar to commence medical procedures.
The prosthesis he received features cutting-edge technology with a microprocessor-controlled knee, a device that can cost over $40,000 in the U.S. market.
Osmar expressed his gratitude, saying, "Even though it's not a natural part of me, being able to walk normally and use both my arms is a wonderful experience," during an interview with Univision 23.
Overcoming Pride: Embracing Community Support
Initially hesitant to accept help, Osmar was moved by the overwhelming community response. "Seeing the support from people, my wife, and my family made me realize that I could achieve great things, like improving my quality of life," he admitted.
When asked if he continued working as a delivery driver, he replied confidently, "Yes, I still do Amazon deliveries, living life as I did before."
Osmar also shared a dream for the future: in a free Cuba, he wishes to establish a project to assist others who have lost limbs to move forward.
Summing up his journey and the collective effort, Osmar stated, "When the Cuban community needs to unite, it truly comes together."
