Pearlandria Boujolly, 29, was apprehended in Miami-Dade on Thursday, facing charges of aggravated manslaughter following the tragic death of her 18-month-old son, who accidentally ingested fentanyl and cocaine. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) disclosed these troubling details.

The incident dates back to January 3, when Miami police and fire rescue teams responded to a distress call after 3 a.m. about an unresponsive baby boy in the county.

The child was swiftly transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where, sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

An autopsy by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office revealed approximately 11 nanograms of fentanyl and traces of cocaine in the toddler's bloodstream.

Details of the Investigation

The investigation unveiled that dangerous substances were left unsecured in a room within the home, leading to the child's accidental consumption. Authorities confirmed Boujolly's absence from the residence at the time of the incident.

A critical piece of evidence is a video captured by a Ring camera at the home. The footage shows the toddler placing a white substance in his mouth and then struggling to stand, repeatedly losing balance and falling.

Just after 9:22 p.m., the child crawled to his usual sleeping spot and became motionless. Hours later, around 3:41 a.m., the same camera recorded the mother's distress upon discovering her unresponsive child.

Arrest and Additional Findings

The arrest warrant also notes that, hours before discovering the child, Boujolly is seen on camera cleaning areas of the kitchen and living room before lying down near her son.

During a subsequent search of the house, investigators found narcotics and three loaded, unsecured firearms within the same unlocked room.

The arrest was carried out on August 20 by agents from the South Florida S.A.F.E. (State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication) Task Force of the FDLE, alongside Miami police.

Boujolly was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade, with bail set between $50,000 and $55,000. Jail records also indicate a separate charge of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Community Reaction and Legal Implications

"It is a heartbreaking day when a child's life is cut short in their own home due to a parent's recklessness and dangerous drugs left within reach," stated Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

Miami Police Chief Edwin Lopez described the death as "a heartbreaking and entirely preventable tragedy," emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for negligence that endangers an innocent child's life.

Aggravated manslaughter of a minor is a first-degree felony in Florida, carrying a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office continues to investigate, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
