In a remarkable discovery, divers from Santiago de Cuba have identified the Cuban Cave Shrimp (Barbouria cubensis), a species classified as critically endangered, within the depths of the Cueva del Agua in Siboney.
The Santiago de Cuba Divers Association announced this Thursday that the shrimp was located a few months prior, celebrating the find as evidence that the species still resides in this cavern, situated within the Siboney-Juticí Ecological Reserve.
“Our divers uncovered a treasure in the Cueva del Agua of Siboney,” the organization stated, describing the Barbouria cubensis as a shrimp that thrives in the absence of sunlight, in cave environments.
The association also released a short video showcasing the shrimp found in the cave's waters.
“In the depths of a Siboney cave, our divers located the Cuban Cave Shrimp,” the organization noted alongside the visual footage.
The group explained that these shrimps can exhibit shades of red, orange, or yellow with white spots, depending on the light conditions.
Listed as Critically Endangered on the Red List by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the species has held this status since the 1996 edition of the global list.
The Santiago-based organization noted that the shrimp’s presence in the Cueva del Agua had not been confirmed since 1973, recalling earlier studies by scientist Nicasio Viña.
Nonetheless, scientific documents do record a subsequent sighting. A specialized review published in 1994 noted that the Cueva del Agua was re-examined during the 1989 Cuban-Dutch Biospeleological Expedition, during which the Barbouria cubensis was observed on submerged rocks.
According to the Divers Association, the Cueva del Agua features an underground lake covering approximately 850 square meters and is located within the Siboney-Juticí Ecological Reserve, an area of significant natural and scientific importance in Santiago de Cuba.
The organization used this discovery as an opportunity to advocate for the conservation of the site: “Protecting the Cueva del Agua is preserving our history, our science, and our ocean.”
The Barbouria cubensis is a cavern-dwelling shrimp species native to Cuba, though it has been subsequently recorded in other Caribbean locations including the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, and Bermuda, as well as Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.
