Celebrations are in order for Alexander Delgado. The frontman of the popular band Gente de Zona marks his 47th birthday this Friday, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in Cuban urban music, both locally and internationally.
Born on August 21, 1979, in Havana, Alexander embarked on his musical journey in the late 1990s, founding Gente de Zona in 2000. What started as a presence in the Cuban urban scene soon evolved into a global phenomenon.
Their breakthrough came with songs that have become staples in recent Latin music history. In 2014, "Bailando," featuring Enrique Iglesias and Descemer Bueno, propelled the group to international fame, earning them three Latin Grammy Awards. Not long after, "La Gozadera," featuring Marc Anthony, further solidified Gente de Zona's presence beyond Cuba.
Since then, Alexander has shared the stage and collaborated with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias, while Gente de Zona continues to captivate audiences worldwide with their unique blend of Cuban and urban sounds.
The Impact of "Patria y Vida"
Another significant milestone in his career came in 2021 with "Patria y Vida." Alexander, alongside Randy Malcom, partnered with Yotuel, Descemer Bueno, Maykel Osorbo, and El Funky on the track that became an anthem for the July 11th protests in Cuba, winning two Latin Grammy Awards. Since then, Delgado has maintained a vocal stance against the Cuban government, vowing not to return to the island until it is free.
Venturing Beyond Music
Outside of music, "El Monarca" has explored his entrepreneurial side. In late 2024, he opened his first restaurant, Lo D'Alex, in Miami, where he celebrated his birthday last year surrounded by family and friends.
On the personal front, Alexander has been in a long-term relationship with Cuban model Mily Alemán, and they share a son, Alex Jr. He is also the father of Kuki and Sofia.
A Year of Milestones
At 47, Alexander looks back on an especially active year. In 2025, he celebrated 25 years of Gente de Zona, launched the project Reparto by Gente de Zona with Randy, aiming to spotlight new voices in the Cuban urban genre, and this summer, the duo embarked on an extensive tour across Spain.
As he turns 47, over two decades since his initial steps into the music world, "El Monarca" continues to lead Gente de Zona, expanding his projects and sharing his music both within and beyond Cuba.
Happy 47th birthday, Monarca!
