The Cuban content creator Lauren Lotti (@laurenlotti5) touched the hearts of many when she shared a TikTok video showcasing her family's effort to distribute meals to vulnerable individuals in the streets of Cuba. This charitable act was made possible thanks to the financial support of a follower from her online community.
Lauren's grandmother and aunt started cooking early, preparing rice, chicken, and plantains—a meal that is considered a luxury for most Cubans today. Meanwhile, her uncle took on the task of delivering the food to various locations. In addition to their general distribution, they provided special assistance to a woman they regularly encounter on the streets.
"While it might seem like just a plate of rice, chicken, and plantains, in today's Cuba, this is a meal that very few can afford, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find even the most basic food," Lauren shared in the video.
The young woman, hailing from Matanzas, also highlighted the soaring cost of chicken: "The truth is, the food situation here is very tough. A pack of chicken is now over one hundred thousand pesos."
This isn't the first instance where Lauren Lotti has harnessed the solidarity of her digital community to aid those in need in Cuba. Last April, she utilized follower donations to purchase essential groceries with funds sent from abroad, and in July, she gathered enough money to buy a larger home for her grandparents in Matanzas.
Her actions are part of a growing movement: other creators, like Juanka, who distributed 100 meals in Havana in April, or two young individuals who handed out food in Santiago de Cuba in May, have engaged in similar initiatives that have gone viral, eliciting a significant response from the Cuban diaspora.
"Thank you to my wonderful community for making this possible. Thank you for allowing us to bring a bit of relief to these people," Lauren expressed as she concluded the video, which garnered over 366,000 views and 50,400 reactions on TikTok.
