Heartbreaking Farewell Captured by Cuban Mothers Leaves Viewers in Tears

Tuesday, August 18, 2026 by Samantha Mendoza

A TikTok video shared on Tuesday by user @rachel.tellez2 has touched the hearts of countless Cubans both on the island and abroad. The emotionally raw footage depicts a scene familiar to many: a mother saying goodbye to her son at the airport, uncertain if their paths will cross again.

In the nearly three-minute clip, a Cuban mother strives to remain composed as she gives her final instructions to her son "Carlitos," who is heading to Nicaragua, his first stop on the journey to the United States—often referred to as "la yuma" in Cuban slang. Before he enters the boarding area, she pleads with her relative Yolanda to help her stay strong: "All I need is strength. When Carlitos leaves, don't say anything that will make me emotional because I am strong, but only to a point."

The video portrays a series of practical guidelines that underscore an unspoken love and quiet sacrifice.

She instructs Carlitos to send a photo as soon as he lands: "As soon as you arrive in Nicaragua, as soon as you see the person waiting for you, send me a picture. Let me know when you get in the car, get out, and send me a photo."

When Carlitos offers to send her mobile credits, she immediately stops him: "Don't send me any recharges. I'm still cooking with wood. I've been happy with wood so far. I lack nothing. You need to focus on yourself."

The farewell also features "Jennifer with the child" and Aunt Yolanda, as witnesses to a parting that the mother insists should not feel like one. "I'm strong here for you," she reassures her son before their final embrace, urging him with all her might: "Go on, my boy, be strong, damn it, you're a strong man. We don't believe in anyone."

Yet when the plane takes off, her strength crumbles. She weeps inconsolably, expressing her grief with a poignant statement: "Yolanda, my love, that plane is gone!" Earlier, through tears, she had said, "Every tear I shed for you is a child."

The video description, penned by the creator, serves as a tribute to an entire generation: "To all the mothers who said goodbye to their children without knowing if they'd see them again."

Quickly gaining traction, the clip garnered over 45,200 views, 6,568 reactions, and 900 comments within hours, becoming another chapter in the collective catharsis experienced by the Cuban diaspora on TikTok, marked by heart-wrenching airport farewells.
