An inspiring tale has emerged from Cárdenas, Matanzas, where a pedicab driver returned a forgotten suitcase left in his vehicle with all its contents untouched. The story has captivated the local community and gained traction on social media.

It all began on Friday, August 14, when a man named Renier boarded an electric pedicab with a canvas roof and two seats. He placed his nearly new, black, hard-shell suitcase with wheels beneath the seat.

After disembarking and paying for the ride near Ayón and Velázquez, Renier walked towards a stop and realized he had left his luggage behind. He ran back, calling out to the driver, but the pedicab had already moved on.

The suitcase contained essential work equipment and materials, money related to his job, clothes, toiletries, and other personal items—all crucial for his daily livelihood.

On Saturday, communicator Christian Arbolaez took to Facebook with an urgent plea to find the driver and retrieve the suitcase.

Two days later, the outcome everyone hoped for was announced: "The suitcase was returned, and everything inside was completely intact."

The pedicab driver was identified as Edey Antúnez. His wife reached out to Arbolaez, explaining that connectivity issues and a low battery prevented them from contacting Renier sooner. However, they had wanted to reassure him from the start. "She assured that everything was safe, that the suitcase was untouched, and that they are Christians who fear God," the post detailed.

Arbolaez used the resolution of the incident to publicize and commend the act: "I want to publicly thank him for his honesty because while we often share negative stories, it is only right to acknowledge those who do the right thing."

The Role of Electric Pedicabs in Cuba's Public Transport Crisis

This story highlights the context of alternative transportation in Cuba, where electric pedicabs have become a primary means of mobility, given the collapse of public transport.

Since 2024, around 10 public service electric tricycles have been operating in Cárdenas as part of a provincial initiative that includes 15 more in Matanzas city. In June of this year, private electric tricycles in the province doubled their fares due to high demand, reflecting a relentless mobility crisis.

Edey Antúnez's story is not unique. Last July, a pedicab driver in Havana gained popularity for charging elderly passengers only what they could afford—another example of solidarity within the sector.
