Hilarious Phone Call Mishap: Cuban in the U.S. Mistakes "Hello" for a Name

Monday, August 17, 2026 by Felix Ortiz

A Cuban living in the United States has become the unexpected star of one of the week's funniest viral videos after misinterpreting the English word "hello" during a phone call, mistaking it for someone's name. The clip, shared on TikTok by content creator Maye Fundora under the account @mayefundora, has already gathered over 185,800 views and nearly 4,000 shares since it was posted on Thursday.

Identified in the audio as Juan Uquiza, the man receives a call where the caller greets him in English. Unable to recognize the greeting, Juan responds puzzled, "Who is it? Now, who is Hello?" not realizing that "jelou"—the Cuban pronunciation of "hello"—is simply a greeting and not anyone's name.

The confusion quickly escalates. At one point in the clip, Juan humorously mixes languages, saying, "They speak to me in English, I don't know any Spanish," as he insists on knowing who is calling him.

The situation quickly spirals out of control. Using a burst of colorful Cuban slang, Juan lets loose a string of exclamations before hanging up, frustrated by his lack of understanding.

The scene-stealer, however, is the person recording the clip, likely Maye Fundora herself. Her laughter at the absurdity of the situation is so intense that she nearly loses her false teeth.

At the end of the video, someone can be heard saying, "The teeth" and "clean it, go on," referring to the dentures, adding another layer of humor to the already hilarious moment. The TikTok video description sums it up bluntly: "OUTBURST AT ITS PEAK. THE TEETH ALMOST FLY."

The clip taps into a well-established trend of Cuban humor on social media, especially among the diaspora in the U.S. The language barrier, "Cubañol," and everyday cultural adaptation scenarios provide an endless well of content that the Cuban community abroad recognizes and celebrates for its genuineness.

In a similar vein, a Cuban woman attempting to buy cigarettes without knowing English went viral in January 2025, and a newly arrived Cuban who confused English words sparked thousands of reactions in May 2024.

Maye Fundora is part of a network of Cuban TikTok creators that includes figures like Juan Tin Ton and Ismaray, with whom she frequently shares tags and mentions in her posts.

As of this Monday, the video has also amassed 7,852 likes and over 1,100 comments, mostly from Cubans who fully relate to the scene.
