A Cuban mother living abroad traveled back to the island to celebrate her daughter Layla's first birthday. Although she arrived with everything necessary for the party, she was unexpectedly taught a lesson in generosity. Daniela brought a piñata, party supplies, and gifts for each child invited, aware of how difficult and expensive it is to obtain many products in Cuba.
"I came with everything to celebrate the birthday here, things for the kids, the piñata, gifts for each child and all, because I know how much we would have wanted, when I was a child, to go to a birthday and be given nice things," she explained.
But after the party, she discovered something unexpected on her bed.
"Let me tell you, I was the one surprised," she admitted.
The guests arrived with small dolls, hair accessories, cookies, and juices for Layla. Under the current economic conditions in Cuba, Daniela saw these simple objects as a real effort by those who purchased them.
"People here can't afford it. They made a sacrifice to bring a gift for my daughter. They sacrificed. How much does a cookie cost? How much does a juice cost? And they came here and arrived with their little gift for my daughter," she expressed emotionally.
Adapting to Local Cuisine
In another video, the mother showcased what her 12-month-old daughter ate in a day in Cuba: eggs, yogurt, and banana for breakfast; chickpeas with rice, meat, and plantain fufu made by her grandmothers for lunch; mango juice at her great-grandmother's house; and beef and plantain soup for dinner.
"The truth is, she adapts very well; she has eaten everything like a delicacy. In short, I haven't had problems with her food here," Daniela explained.
Family Connections and Cultural Reflections
For Daniela, the trip also allowed Layla to connect with several generations of her family, as the child has grandparents and great-grandparents in Cuba.
The images evoked numerous comments about a trait many associate with Cuban culture: sharing even when one has little.
"That's how we Cubans are, we give everything without having anything," remarked one person. "Cubans have a huge heart, always willing to give our best," said another.
