Man Allegedly Cuban Threatens Journalist with Death in Cancun: "Be Careful Filming Me"

An individual, reportedly of Cuban descent, made a death threat against a Mexican journalist covering a fatal accident on August 14 in Cancun, Quintana Roo. The confrontation, captured on camera, quickly gained traction on social media, sparking widespread reactions.

"Be careful filming me, be careful or I'll kill you," the man is heard saying as he confronts the journalist on Bonampak Avenue, according to Heraldo de México Quintana Roo. Another account of the incident mentions a second threat: "Erase what you have of me, or I'll kill you."

Despite the threats, the journalist continued filming and referred to the man as Cuban, though authorities have yet to officially confirm his nationality.

"This Cuban man is getting arrogant with other people, other colleagues... acting high and mighty, as always, he's not even in his country," the reporter stated on camera during the altercation.

Accident Scene and Unconfirmed Identities

The footage shows the man present at the site where several journalists were covering the accident. Currently, there is no information linking him to the driver involved in the crash.

The threat unfolded as journalists documented a severe traffic accident that resulted in one woman's death and injuries to at least two others.

Reports indicate that a white Honda SUV was speeding down Bonampak Avenue when the driver lost control, veered onto the median, knocked over a streetlight, and traveled over 50 meters before hitting another vehicle near Plaza Península.

A woman exiting the struck vehicle died at the scene, despite paramedics' efforts to save her.

Speculation and Community Tensions

Local media have unofficially suggested that the driver responsible for the accident was a Cuban doctor from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and allegedly under the influence of alcohol. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding his nationality, profession, or this alleged circumstance.

This individual is distinct from the man who threatened the journalist in the video, a crucial clarification amid the dissemination of these intertwined stories.

The attempt to prevent cameras from capturing the alleged aggressor had the opposite effect. As he threatened the reporter, others present also recorded the incident, facilitating the widespread distribution of the footage on social media.

Broader Implications and Past Incidents

So far, no formal complaint or legal action has been publicly reported against the man for his threats.

This episode arises within a particularly sensitive context for the Cuban community residing in Cancun, following other incidents involving Cuban citizens that have sparked controversy and, simultaneously, expressions of rejection that civil organizations have denounced as discriminatory.

One of the most significant incidents occurred on May 28 in Supermanzana 23, when a Cuban citizen identified as Rigoberto "N" was accused of assaulting a Mexican during a dispute over an unleashed dog's bite.

The video of that confrontation went viral, escalating tensions until around 200 people gathered outside the Cuban couple's home, throwing stones and bottles. They were subsequently turned over to the National Institute of Migration.

Following the unrest, the couple's home was severely damaged, while civil organizations like CISVAC reported discrimination complaints against other Cubans unrelated to the altercation, including job and rental refusals, public insults, and signs reading "Cubans not accepted."

In response, the Quintana Roo government urged against retaliation and generalizing individual behaviors across the entire Cuban community.

The presence of Cubans in the state is notable and has gained visibility, particularly because of healthcare professionals. As of February 2026, the IMSS-Bienestar program included 173 Cuban doctors assigned to rural areas of Quintana Roo, part of a bilateral agreement supported by Claudia Sheinbaum's government, deploying about 3,650 Cuban professionals across 23 Mexican states.

This new incident once again places Cuban citizens at the forefront of public conversation in Cancun but occurs in a context where individual responsibility and nationality should remain distinct.
