Informal Currency Market in Cuba Sees Mixed Activity: Dollar Steady, Euro and MLC Decline

Sunday, August 16, 2026 by Michael Hernandez

The informal currency exchange market in Cuba is witnessing mixed trends this Sunday. The U.S. dollar remains unchanged at 664 Cuban pesos, whereas the euro has dropped to 758 pesos and the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) has decreased to 446 pesos.

Sunday's opening values reveal that the dollar holds steady compared to the previous day. In contrast, the euro has fallen from 760 pesos, a reduction of 2.5 pesos (-0.3%), while the MLC has experienced a more significant dip, losing 11 pesos (-2.4%) from yesterday's 457 pesos.

Despite the dollar's daily stability, it remains below its value from a week ago. Seven days ago, it was valued at approximately 673 pesos, marking an 8.5 pesos decrease (-1.3%).

The euro's decline is more pronounced when compared over a week. It was around 778 pesos a week earlier and now stands at 758, a 20-peso decrease (-2.6%).

As for the MLC, its current value is four pesos below the 450 pesos recorded a week ago, equating to a 0.9% drop. The wide range between buying and selling offers and fewer data points suggest caution when interpreting this benchmark.

Monthly Trends and Market Analysis

Looking back a month, the picture changes. The dollar was at 655 pesos, meaning today's value represents an increase of 9 pesos (+1.4%).

The euro was at 755 pesos a month ago and has since risen by 2.5 pesos (+0.3%), while the MLC has climbed from 442 to 446 pesos, an increase of 4 pesos (+0.9%).

These 30-day comparisons should be considered carefully, as some differences might reflect index methodology adjustments rather than actual market movements.

In the past 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a high of 675 pesos and a low of 656. The euro has ranged from 755 to 790 pesos, and the MLC has varied between 413 and 496 pesos. Currently, the market appears more restrained for both dollar and euro compared to their recent peaks.

Understanding the Cuban Informal Currency Market

The stability of the U.S. dollar can be attributed to consistent demand and supply dynamics in the Cuban informal market, alongside external economic factors that influence currency values.

What affects the euro's decline in Cuba's informal market?

The euro's decline can result from various factors, including changes in European economic policies, shifts in investor confidence, and alterations in local Cuban market demand.

How does the MLC differ from other currencies in Cuba?

The MLC, or Freely Convertible Currency, serves as a digital currency that is mainly used for purchasing goods in authorized stores, differing from the more widely recognized U.S. dollar and euro.
