Cuban journalist Javier Díaz will take the helm of the 6 p.m. news broadcast on N+ Univision Miami starting next Monday, as disclosed by El Nuevo Herald citing unnamed sources.
Díaz is set to fill the vacancy left by fellow Cuban Ambrosio Hernández, who was dismissed this week amidst a new wave of layoffs at TelevisaUnivision. This restructuring also led to the departure of news director Yolanda Zugasti and other network professionals.
According to the Herald, Díaz will team up with Jenny Padura, who has been a part of the evening news anchor team since April 2024.
Having been with TelevisaUnivision for nine years, Díaz had previously anchored the weekend news solo, a role he took over in October 2024, succeeding Mario Vallejo.
His transition to the weekday edition marks a significant change within Univision's local news team following the exits of several key figures, including news director Yolanda Zugasti.
When asked by El Nuevo Herald, the network had not yet officially confirmed Díaz's appointment.
In an email response dated August 12, TelevisaUnivision noted that they were still assessing how to fill the open positions and would announce new appointments soon.
Born in San José de las Lajas, Mayabeque Province, Díaz graduated with a degree in Social Communication in 2011 from the University of Agrarian of Havana and worked as a news anchor for Cubavisión Internacional before leaving Cuba.
In 2015, he embarked on a migration journey that brought him to the southern border of the United States.
Díaz has frequently shared that this personal journey enabled him to forge a unique connection with immigrant stories, which he later covered in the U.S.
His first opportunity in Miami television came with Telemundo 51, where he reported on the death of Fidel Castro in November 2016 from the Versailles restaurant on Calle Ocho.
Since November 2018, Díaz has been with Univision, where he has gained recognition for his reports on Cuba, breaking news, and investigations related to viewer complaints.
The journalist has been a vocal critic of the Cuban regime from his platform in Miami.
Beyond his television role, Díaz has cultivated a significant following on social media, boasting over a million followers, as reported.
In a podcast interview on El mundo de Darwin, he dismissed the myth of "free education" promoted by the regime: "It's time to leave that story behind. University students endured significant hardships for their degrees and professions."
In the same interview, he pondered the role of communicators: "As a culture, as a people, we must leave a legacy for future generations, much like our forebears did."
This appointment comes amid a major restructuring at TelevisaUnivision, which announced hundreds of layoffs in December 2025 and nearly eliminated its U.S.-based digital team in January 2026, impacting 29 positions across the U.S., Mexico, and Colombia.
