On Friday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez declared that the "greatness and legacy" of Fidel Castro will withstand the test of time and outlast the criticisms of his detractors. His remarks were particularly directed at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and factions of the Cuban exile community in South Florida.
Rodríguez made these comments in a post on X, where he accused those in the U.S. government and Florida who question the late dictator's legacy of being "vindictive and opportunistic."
"The greatness and imprint of the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, will not be overshadowed by time or by the animosity of a handful of vindictive and opportunistic figures in the U.S. government, like the Secretary of State, and in South Florida," he proclaimed.
Additionally, the foreign minister accused Castro's critics of trying to "intimidate" those who study and follow his ideology, amid the official campaign run by the Cuban government celebrating the centenary of Castro's birth.
Rodríguez further contended that Castro's legacy remains alive in the expressions of "love and solidarity" towards Cuba, which, he claimed, millions of people around the world continue to demonstrate.
In contrast, he once again blamed Washington for much of the hardships faced by the Cuban population. According to the official, the U.S. government "continues to suffocate us, causing immense harm and suffering to Cuban families."
The foreign minister concluded his message by elevating Castro's image, describing him as a "paradigm" for those who champion "peace, independence, humanism, social justice, solidarity, and anti-imperialism."
These statements follow comments from Vice Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío, who also publicly clashed with Marco Rubio and asserted that history will remember Fidel Castro for his "immense contribution."
Fernández de Cossío portrayed the former leader as one who aspired for "a better world," contrasting his vision with the current policies of Washington.
The Cuban diplomats' verbal onslaught comes in response to harsh criticisms from Rubio against Castro. The Secretary of State labeled Castro as "an utter failure," except — as he put it — in destroying Cuba and impoverishing, imprisoning, and killing part of its population, warning that those who attempt to emulate his model may end up doomed to the same failure.
