A colossal alligator, stretching 10 feet (approximately 3.05 meters) in length and tipping the scales at over 300 pounds, was safely captured near Coconut Creek High School in South Florida. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The Coconut Creek Police Department announced on Saturday that the gigantic reptile was spotted beside a canal located at the intersection of Coconut Creek Parkway and Lyons Road, bordering the high school's grounds.
The operation to capture and relocate the alligator took place on Friday night, with assistance from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The alligator has been relocated to Everglades Holiday Park, where it will settle into a new habitat, as reported by Local 10 News.
Officials humorously noted the alligator's impressive size by suggesting it could have played as a left tackle for the Coconut Creek High School football team. The police also joked that perhaps the reptile was awaiting the school's reopening after the summer break or that the nearby canal served as a "Buc-ee’s for alligators."
This event occurred just days after another alligator was discovered on a baseball field at a high school in Osceola County, while the football team was practicing nearby. That alligator was also captured and relocated without incident.
Such sightings of alligators near educational facilities are not uncommon in Florida. Back in 2016, Davie police captured an alligator measuring 11 feet and weighing 450 pounds near two schools. The capture was executed with the help of volunteers, although the fate of that 11-foot, 450-pound reptile remained unknown.
Another case in 2019 involved an alligator, measuring eight feet and two inches, showing up inside a primary school in Palmetto, close to a playground. Fortunately, students had not yet arrived, and the area was secured until FWC personnel removed the animal.
