A construction crane arm dramatically collapsed on Friday afternoon, landing on the pool deck of the upscale One Plaza West Brickell condominium in Miami's Brickell neighborhood. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among residents or workers, as confirmed by Miami's Fire Rescue Department.
The mishap occurred around 3:55 p.m. while a crew was assembling the crane at a construction site adjacent to the building located at 1818 SW 1st Ave. The crane was not operational at the time, as it was in the midst of being put together.
Lieutenant Pete Sánchez, a spokesperson for the fire department, stated that the crane experienced "some type of failure," leading its arm to twist and fall onto the residential complex's pool area.
Emergency teams promptly assessed the site and confirmed no residents were harmed. Construction personnel assured authorities that "all workers were accounted for and unharmed."
As a precautionary step, the pool deck has been roped off to ensure resident safety. The building itself is a 22-story condominium with 188 units, completed in 2009.
The construction site where the incident originated is part of a public-private partnership project valued at roughly $158 million. Spearheaded by Westbri School Development LLC, the project includes the development of West Brickell Middle School, designed to accommodate approximately 632 students, along with a residential building of around 465 units.
Both Miami's Building Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have launched investigations to ascertain the cause of the failure. Attempts to reach Westbri School Development LLC for comments were unsuccessful.
This incident occurs amid a surge in construction activity in Brickell and a recorded history of crane-related accidents in Miami-Dade. Just last April, a large crane collapsed in Hialeah without causing injuries, and in January, six workers were severely injured during I-395 bridge construction in downtown Miami when a beam fell from about 30 feet high.
Federal OSHA regulations mandate inspections prior to crane assembly and during operation, highlighting the significance of the crane being in the assembly phase at the time of the failure.
