The United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has unveiled the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) this past Monday, a newly established military entity tasked with targeting drug cartels and other transnational threats within the Western Hemisphere.
General Francis L. Donovan, the SOUTHCOM commander, made the announcement, describing the new unit as the "action arm" of the U.S. military's regional operations.
"We will systematically disrupt these networks that threaten our homeland and our partners in our shared region. Together with the Coalition of the Americas Against Cartels, and our 18 allied nations committed to this cause, we will take the fight to the enemy. Today marks the commencement of the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, the action arm of U.S. Southern Command," Donovan stated.
The transition took effect at midnight on Monday, officially replacing the former Joint Task Force Southern Spear (JTF-84-2) with the new structure, according to an official release from SOUTHCOM.
"At midnight today, we transitioned from Joint Task Force Southern Spear to the activation of the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere. The JTF-WHEM will build on a legacy of excellence to safeguard the region and defeat all threats," noted SOUTHCOM in its statement.
Donovan articulated the mission of the new force with resolve: "We will find, close with, and destroy these threats impacting the United States and our key partners in the region. We are changing the rules of engagement."
The establishment of JTF-WHEM marks a consolidation of anti-drug efforts under a permanent command structure with broader geographic reach, aligning with the Trump administration's policy of maximum pressure on transnational criminal networks in the hemisphere.
JTF-WHEM will work in coordination with the Coalition of the Americas Against Cartels, which includes 18 partner nations.
This coalition was officially launched by President Trump in March during the Summit Shield of the Americas, with countries like Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, and Peru among others.
The new task force inherits the operational legacy of JTF Southern Spear, which was established in October 2025 under the II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Since its inception, this structure has conducted numerous maritime interdiction operations and strikes against drug-running vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
According to a report released in June, the United States had targeted over 60 vessels and resulted in more than 210 fatalities since the commencement of Operation Southern Spear in September 2025.
