Cuban YouTuber Adrian Peachy disclosed on Sunday that several weeks ago, he received a FaceTime call from prominent Cuban influencers Taty and Camila Guiribitey, a mother-daughter duo based in Miami. During the call, they informed him of their intention to sue him over a video he had posted on his YouTube channel.
This revelation, which Peachy shared in a TikTok video that has since garnered nearly 196,000 views, has stirred significant discussion within the Cuban community in Miami.
Peachy recounted that the situation began on June 13, when he uploaded a reaction to a social media controversy involving the Guiribiteys. The following day, he received the call. "They were ready to sue me over the video, but considering my immigration status, they opted against it," he said, describing the interaction as a veiled threat.
He further explained that during the call, the Guiribiteys mentioned their connections with influential political figures in Florida, including Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They suggested that maintaining a good relationship with them could be more beneficial than adversarial.
"I perceived it as a threat—being told about your connections with politicians like Maria Elvira Salazar and Marco Rubio, and the implication that being on good terms with you could be advantageous," Peachy stated in his video.
It was also mentioned that the Guiribiteys’ lawyer is on retainer, implying that filing a lawsuit wouldn't incur additional costs for them.
The influencer known as La Dura (Diliamne Jouve González) also played a role in the episode. In a detailed YouTube video, Peachy explained that La Dura, whom he regards as a close friend, attempted to mediate between the parties involved.
Peachy waited two months before going public with the incident. He emphasized the legal distinction between defamation and opinion: "Defamation and opinion are not the same. Defamation is a crime and is punishable by law. Opinion is protected by the First Amendment in this country."
What upset him the most, he said, was the use of his immigration status as leverage. "Exploiting a situation that keeps hundreds of thousands living in fear to silence someone just because you disliked their opinion," he remarked.
He also pointed out what he sees as a contradiction: "They criticize the Cuban dictatorship and claim to support Cuban exiles while trying to silence those who haven't committed any crime."
Peachy concluded his message with a firm statement: "I didn't stay silent in Cuba, and I won't be silenced here."
