The Tragedy Behind the Scenes
Mauro Menéndez, known artistically as MAAHEZ, was a DJ and music producer who passed away at the age of 30 on July 17, 2026, in Barbados due to severe complications from pneumonia.
Mujica learned of the devastating news while she was filming the reality show in Bogotá, Colombia, and immediately traveled to Barbados. In a gesture of respect, the production of Top Chef VIP halted filming for several days.
On July 17, the actress broke her silence on social media with a brief yet heart-wrenching statement: "I am devastated."
Days later, she confirmed her return to the set, publicly thanking the production team for their warm welcome and the respect they showed her upon her return to Colombia.
Mauro's father, Cuban musician Osamu Menéndez, was the one who publicly announced his son's death on social media, sharing his own sorrow over the loss.
The fifth season of Top Chef VIP premieres on Tuesday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. CT on Telemundo, with availability the following day on Peacock and the Telemundo app.
