Cuban actor Armando Tomey has coined the term "permanent neuro-Castroism" to articulate the profound and chronic pain felt by Cuban exiles whenever memories of their homeland arise.
In a recent Instagram reel, Tomey elaborates on how this phenomenon can be triggered by the simplest stimuli. Once this feeling takes over, thoughts of the island become inescapable.
"Whenever I drink coffee, I think of Cuba. When I eat, I'm reminded of Cuba. Even when I discard leftover food, Cuba comes to mind. I call it permanent neuro-Castroism, and it's not merely nostalgia or sadness. It's a deep pain knowing our island is held captive," stated the actor.
The Island as a Prison
Tomey rejects the notion that it's mere nostalgia, instead describing Cuba as "a massive prison adrift, held hostage by a group of people who have oppressed it for 67 years, plunging it into utter misery."
Addressing Miguel Díaz-Canel directly, Tomey denounced the humanitarian crisis gripping the Cuban populace.
"Díaz-Canel, people in Cuba are dying on the streets. People are collecting water from ditches, canals, and ponds just to bathe, to flush toilets clogged with filth. Díaz-Canel, take all the money you and your cronies have stolen from Cuba and get out. Go to Russia, China, or North Korea," Tomey declared.
He also demanded one final thing from the Cuban leader: "Let Cuba determine its own destiny."
Consistent Critic of the Regime
This isn't the first time Armando Tomey has spoken out against the regime. On July 25, he criticized the "Cuban utopia" touted by Díaz-Canel, calling him a "puppet, clown, and abuser."
Earlier, on July 4, he posted a video asking, "And Cuba, when?" In March, he openly declared that the island "suffers from misery and repression and cries for freedom."
Armando Tomey, a well-loved artist in Cuba, is remembered by telenovela fans for his role in Sol de Batey (1985). He emigrated to the United States in 2013, fleeing economic hardship and lack of freedom. Tomey currently resides in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
