Obelia Blanco: A New Chapter in Galicia's Heart

While many see their eighties as a time to bid farewell to life, renowned actress Obelia Blanco saw it as a chance for a fresh start. She journeyed to Allariz, a charming village in Galicia, where she discovered that while age may close some doors, it can never silence the voice of creativity.

Hailing from Santiago de Cuba, a city brimming with music, legends, and emotion, Obelia's voice has long been synonymous with Cuban culture. As an unforgettable actress and a distinctive radio host, she brought the spirit of Cuba into households across the nation. Alongside Alden Knight, her radio show "Hablando de Cuba" became a cherished daily connection to the heart of the country.

After more than six decades on stage and in studios, Obelia transitioned from the limelight to new pursuits. She traded applause for learning, major venues for a local radio station, and the rush of television for the calm of poetry. At 84, she proves that art doesn’t age; it simply finds new ways to bloom.

In a heartfelt conversation with a long-time friend, Obelia shares her journey in Allariz: “I’ve been here for four years now, living with my daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. When I arrived at 80, I was eager to keep working, but job hunting often led to disbelief. People insisted it was time for me to rest. Imagine that, after a lifetime of work!”

Determined to reinvent herself, she delved into theater, taught patchwork courses, and studied pattern making. She also started "Voces y versos," a poetry and music program on 107.2 Radio Allariz, which she thoroughly enjoys. Besides, she attends gym, memory, and handicraft classes at the Fogar dos Maiores and collaborates on another community radio program.

Looking back, Obelia recalls her childhood dreams in Santiago, where she aspired to be a dancer, pianist, or painter but was met with skepticism. Growing up an orphan among strangers, she learned resilience and self-reliance, using early hardships as fuel for her ambitions.

Her passion for the arts emerged unexpectedly. A chance to join a theater group unveiled a world where she could thrive, leading to her enrollment in the School of Dramatic Arts in Santiago de Cuba. Under the mentorship of Argentine professor Adolfo Gutkin, Obelia blossomed into a confident performer.

For over 60 years, Obelia pursued excellence in her career, striving to uplift and comfort audiences. As both an actress and a broadcaster, she found that each role complemented the other. Her iconic portrayal of "Yara" in "El Corsario Negro" left an indelible mark, illustrating the profound connection she had with her audience.

She reflects on the deep bond formed with Alden Knight during their 37-year tenure on "Hablando de Cuba," attributing their success to mutual respect and seamless collaboration.
