U.S. Boosts Production of 'Patriot Passport' Amid Surging Demand: 250,000 More Copies to Be Released

The U.S. Department of State revealed on Thursday its plans to release an additional 250,000 copies of the special edition "Patriot Passport," a commemorative document created for the 250th anniversary of American independence. This announcement was made through a statement from the Office of the Spokesperson.

This move comes in response to what the Department of State described as an "overwhelming demand" following the release of the passport. The initial batch was made available on July 6 at the Washington, D.C. Passport Agency and consisted of approximately 25,000 copies, which quickly sold out.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio endorsed the expansion through his account on X, describing the document as "a tangible piece of our national identity, a reminder that, wherever you are in the world, you are an American."

Design and Features of the 'Patriot Passport'

This commemorative passport features a portrait of President Donald Trump, captured during his second inauguration, alongside the text of the Declaration of Independence. It also includes a golden flag inscribed with "Liberty 250" and an illustration of the Founding Fathers signing the nation’s charter.

Inside, Trump's signature appears in gold letters, while the back cover displays the 1777 U.S. flag, with the number 250 at the center of the original thirteen stars.

Despite its special design, the passport costs the same as a standard one, priced at $130, with no additional fees. It retains all the security features and validity of a regular passport.

The Department of State emphasized that this passport can only be obtained through an in-person appointment. It is unavailable by mail or online.

Nationwide Availability

The nationwide rollout will commence on August 8 with special application sessions in cities such as Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, New Orleans, New York, Centennial (Colorado), and Stamford (Connecticut).

Subsequently, the Department of State plans to extend the document's availability to all 27 passport agencies across the country throughout August.

This initiative represents a first in U.S. history: a sitting president's image graces an American passport.

Edward Kolla, a historian at Georgetown University and expert on passport history, called the measure "unprecedented" and noted that he is unaware of any other country featuring a sitting head of state on its passport.

Political Controversy and Cuban-American Reactions

The decision has sparked criticism from Democratic lawmakers. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand accused Trump of being "too busy trying to put his face on everything," while Representative Mike Levin labeled the design a "distraction."

The "Patriot Passport" is part of a series of initiatives by the Trump administration to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence and bolster national identity. Other initiatives include new $100 bills bearing the president's signature and a dollar coin featuring Trump's image.

The document has also stirred reactions within the Cuban-American community. Recently, a Cuban woman living in the United States announced her decision not to renew her passport due to Trump's portrait, sparking heated debates on social media about the symbolic implications of the design and the intersection of national identity and political preferences.
