Taking to Facebook, Devitt depicted the event with a striking statement: "Florida certainly lived up to its reputation this weekend with an electrifyingly high number of lightning strikes from intense storms on both Saturday and Sunday."
The map, densely populated with yellow lightning icons, illustrates a heavy concentration of strikes stretching through the central corridor of the state. This path runs from Jacksonville in the north, down to the Florida Keys in the south, passing through Daytona Beach, Orlando, Tampa, North Port, and Miami.
The impact extended beyond just a visual spectacle. In North Palm Beach, for instance, a lightning bolt struck a melaleuca tree around 2 PM on Sunday, resulting in a minor gas leak and the rupture of a six-inch water pipe.
Responding to this incident were teams from Seacoast Utility Authority, Florida Public Utilities, and Florida Power & Light, alongside firefighters and North Palm Beach's Public Works employees.
Record-Breaking Lightning Season
This weekend's events are part of an extraordinarily active 2026 lightning season. By early July, Florida had already recorded over one million lightning strikes for the year, with more than 200,000 occurring in just one week, according to Devitt's data.
Hours before sharing the weekend's lightning map, Devitt issued a warning to golfers in Venice, Florida, who were braving the storms, stating plainly: "No round of golf is worth getting hit by lightning."
