The average cost of gasoline in the United States surged once again in July 2026, surpassing $4.11 per gallon, as reported by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

According to Telemundo 51, this increase of roughly 20 cents comes after June's dip, where prices fell below $4 per gallon for the first time since March.

The escalation follows renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran, which have once more impacted global energy markets.

By July 20, AAA already noted that the national average had climbed back to the $4 threshold, with a consistent upward trend in the days thereafter.

Geopolitical Tensions and Market Volatility

Experts highlight the tension in the Strait of Hormuz as a significant geopolitical factor. This vital passageway, through which 20% to 25% of the world's oil supply travels, is a critical chokepoint. Any threats to this corridor immediately exert pressure on crude oil prices, inevitably affecting the price at the pump.

The year 2026 has been marked by volatility. Gas prices began at $2.90 per gallon in late January, peaked at $4.56 in May when crude oil prices soared past $125 a barrel, briefly fell to $3.99 in June, and are now on the rise again.

State-Specific Gasoline Prices

In Florida, as of July 27, the state average stands at $3.807 per gallon, slightly below the national average. However, in Miami, prices had already climbed above $3.97 per gallon by mid-month, approaching the $4 threshold.

California remains the priciest state, with gasoline costs fluctuating between $5.90 and $6.10 per gallon at various points throughout the year.

Political Responses and Initiatives

President Donald Trump has sought to politically address the impact of rising gas prices. On June 29, he demanded retailers reduce prices "immediately" and warned of "big trouble" while setting a target of $2.50 per gallon.

On July 7, he launched the first station of his "Freedom Fuel" network in Pennsylvania, offering gasoline at $3.47 per gallon. Despite this, the initiative hasn't significantly influenced the broader market; a station from the same network in Bensalem was selling gasoline at $3.82 per gallon by July 21.

Key Questions About Rising Gas Prices in the U.S.

What caused the recent increase in gas prices?

The recent rise in gas prices is primarily due to renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran, impacting global energy markets and driving up oil prices.

Why is California experiencing the highest gas prices?

California's high gas prices are attributed to state-specific taxes and regulations, coupled with its reliance on imported crude oil, making it particularly susceptible to global market fluctuations.

How has President Trump responded to the gas price increase?

President Trump has called for immediate price reductions from retailers and has introduced the "Freedom Fuel" network to offer lower prices, though its market impact remains limited.
