Michael Alfonso, the grandson of Cuban immigrants who fled the communist regime, has placed his family's history at the forefront of his campaign for a seat in the U.S. Congress.
The 26-year-old Republican is vying for the nomination in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District primary, set for August 11. He strongly attributes his opposition to socialism and communism to the experiences of his grandparents.
In an interview with Fox News' LiveNow, Alfonso stated, "We look across the nation and witness a radical rise of communism and socialism, even right here in northern Wisconsin."
"My grandparents came to this country from Cuba. I know a thing or two about socialism. It's communism. That's what it is. And it fails everywhere it's tried," he added.
Alfonso reiterated this message on social media platform X, directly linking his family's history to the political discourse in the United States.
"The leading Democratic candidate for governor is a socialist. Democrats may call it socialism, but they actually mean communism. The same communism my grandparents escaped from in Cuba. We can't allow that ideology to take root here," he wrote.
His remarks target Francesca Hong, a state representative and prominent figure in the Democratic Socialists of America, who is currently the favorite for the Democratic primary for Wisconsin's gubernatorial race, according to a University of Marquette Law School poll released on July 22.
Support from Trump and the Duffy Circle
Alfonso's candidacy is bolstered by the endorsement of President Donald Trump, who officially backed him in January, describing him as a "MAGA warrior."
He also enjoys the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson and four out of six Republican congressmen from Wisconsin. Furthermore, he has a strong connection to one of the state's influential figures: Alfonso is married to Evita Duffy, daughter of Sean Duffy, the former U.S. Transportation Secretary and a previous representative of the same congressional district.
Duffy has played an active role in his son-in-law's campaign, transferring a million dollars from his old campaign account to a super PAC supporting Alfonso's candidacy.
With this backing, Alfonso leads the fundraising race among Republican contenders, having raised approximately $3.4 million between April and June 2026.
Internal GOP Criticism
Despite the backing from key party figures, Alfonso's candidacy has raised concerns within the Republican Party. GOP leaders in several district counties question his youth and limited political experience.
"I think what they're doing is morally wrong. There are many more qualified individuals who know this district and would represent it better than Michael Alfonso," expressed Tanner Hiller, the Republican Party chairman of Iron County.
His main rival in the primary is Kevin Hermening, a 66-year-old ex-Marine who was held hostage in Iran for 444 days after the 1979 U.S. embassy takeover, and has a long history in Wisconsin Republican politics.
In response to criticism about his age, Alfonso often points out that many of America's Founding Fathers began their political careers at a young age.
"I'm a young man with the energy of youth, but I hold the values of someone in their sixties," he has stated.
Alfonso, a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate in 2022, worked in construction while studying and later spent nearly a year collaborating on the podcast of conservative commentator Dan Bongino in Florida.
The upcoming Republican primary on August 11 will determine whether Trump's endorsement, Sean Duffy's political influence, and a campaign centered around his Cuban grandparents' story can propel Michael Alfonso to the U.S. Congress.
