Jacksonville Named Florida's "Unhappiest City" in National Survey

In the 2026 WalletHub ranking of the happiest cities in the United States, Jacksonville has emerged as the least happy city in Florida. It landed at position 125 out of 182 major cities analyzed nationwide, with a score of just 48.92 out of 100.

The study evaluates 29 metrics grouped into three categories: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment. Jacksonville was identified as facing significant challenges in mental health, employment conditions, and income levels compared to other cities in Florida.

Researchers noted that Jacksonville, located in northern Florida, struggled particularly with emotional and physical well-being indicators, along with economic metrics. However, the city showed slightly better outcomes in the community and environment category.

The data supports this assessment: the median household income in Jacksonville is approximately $66,981, based on 2023 estimates. This is below the $75,000 threshold that WalletHub identifies as the income level above which money no longer significantly enhances personal well-being.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo explained the rationale behind the study: "The ideal city provides conditions that promote good mental and physical health, such as reasonable working hours, short commutes, favorable climate, and supportive neighbors."

He further summarized the key to deciding where to live: "When choosing where to live to maximize your happiness, you should select a city that offers more than just an average decent income."

At the opposite end of the spectrum in Florida, Cape Coral was the top-ranked city in the state, though it only reached the 41st spot nationally with 60.27 points, closely followed by Pembroke Pines in 42nd place with 60.24 points.

Other major cities in Florida also ranked lower: Fort Lauderdale at 53, Orlando at 67, Tampa at 68, and Miami at 78, with a score of 55.74.

Tallahassee and Hialeah rounded out the list on the negative side, ranking 100th and 101st, respectively, with scores of 53.39 and 53.29.

Specifically, Hialeah, a city with a predominantly Cuban population in southern Florida, has a history of unfavorable rankings: it was labeled the most miserable city in the state in 2019 and was among the worst places to rent in the country in 2023.

Statewide, Florida was ranked 14th among the 50 states in WalletHub's happiness index, with a score of 55.86, boosted by its low rate of adult depression, the third-lowest in the nation.

However, this state-level position contrasts sharply with the performance of its cities: none of Florida's major urban areas broke into the top 40 of the national ranking.

Nationally, the happiest city in the United States for 2026, according to WalletHub, was Fremont in California, followed by Bismarck in North Dakota, and Scottsdale in Arizona.
