Yureibys Torresilla, a well-known figure in Sancti Spíritus often referred to as "The Hero," stumbled upon a black Nike backpack in his neighborhood containing a significant amount of Cuban pesos. Instead of keeping it, he turned to social media to locate the rightful owner.
Torresilla is a prominent leader of the humanitarian initiative "Brothers of the Street," and he shared photos of the backpack and its contents, which included bundles of 20, 50, 100, and 200 Cuban peso bills.
"I have this backpack in my possession; I found it here in my neighborhood. It has all this money inside but no identification. Incredible, I am at home, Independence #203, next to the provincial campground after the funeral home. No ID," Torresilla posted on his profile.
To ensure that only the genuine owner can reclaim the money, Torresilla devised a verification method. Inside the backpack is an item that only the real owner would be able to describe.
"There's something inside, and whoever comes must tell me what it is," he warned in the comments section of his post.
The response from his followers was swift and mixed, ranging from admiration to concern. Several cautioned him about the risks of publicly revealing his address alongside the backpack's contents.
"Be careful, someone might take your address and come for it, don't trust anyone," wrote Nelys Valdés, acknowledging at the same time that Torresilla "has a big heart and is very honest."
Another follower, Ana Sofia Cardoso Curras, went further, suggesting it might be a trap: "Be very careful, maybe they've set a bait for you. There's something fishy about this. Take a photo of whoever comes to claim it, and when you hand it over, do it in front of at least three witnesses."
Torresilla calmly addressed these warnings: "No, ma'am, thank you, but it's not like that... someone just dropped it."
A close follower highlighted how this gesture aligns with who he is. "Always with his good heart, someone who gives what he has even if he ends up needing to ask, but who doesn't want what isn't his," Reinier Pérez commented.
This act carries particular significance given the current situation where Cuba is experiencing one of its most severe economic crises. In such a context, any amount of cash is of immense value to a Cuban family.
Torresilla is no stranger in the province. From his home at Independence #203, he organizes meals for the vulnerable and distributes medicine and food to those in need, funded mainly by donations from Cubans living abroad.
The regime has attempted to hinder his efforts on multiple occasions. Last November, authorities mistreated the activist as he tried to deliver medication for 700 people at a state market.
Following that incident, Torresilla stated, "We will never ask any State venue for permission to do good."
