Yordania Villamil Hernández, a Cuban doctor residing in Panama, has reached out for assistance from her community as she navigates a legal battle that threatens the stability she built after years of fighting for her daughter's custody.
In an interview with CiberCuba, Villamil Hernández explained that a court had granted her legal custody of her daughter and issued a restraining order against the father, a Panamanian citizen who has subjected the family to numerous legal challenges since their divorce.
Despite the court's decision in her favor, the harassment persisted. The father continued to intimidate both mother and daughter, even initiating an Amber Alert on Friday, although the child was under her mother's legal care.
This ongoing harassment has forced Villamil Hernández to relocate several times to ensure their safety.
The continuous legal battles have also cost this doctor, originally from Las Tunas, her most recent job.
The numerous lawsuits filed by the child's father have drained her financially and emotionally, even though all legal actions have been dismissed. Unable to afford the legal representation needed to finalize this tumultuous chapter on her own, her friend Susel Pérez launched a fundraising campaign on GiveSendGo, aiming to raise $3,500. At the time of publication, the campaign had garnered $515 from eight donors.
"I never imagined I would have to start such a campaign, but today I do so with the hope of helping a person whose kindness is known by everyone who meets her and her family," Pérez wrote when launching the initiative.
Pérez described Yordania as "a kindhearted woman" and noted that although she has strived to overcome her challenges, "the circumstances have surpassed her capabilities."
According to Pérez, all funds raised "will be sent directly to Yordania and used to cover her essential needs while she regains her footing."
Amidst these difficulties, Yordania's daughter has achieved honor roll status at her school, a testament to their resilience.
Latin American feminist organizations consulted by this outlet highlight that repeatedly using legal demands as a tool to wear down an ex-partner with legal custody is a documented form of coercive abuse.
Regarding the Amber Alert, the system requires a reasonable belief that the minor is in grave and imminent danger; activating it without such justification in a custody dispute constitutes misuse of the system.
Similar cases of Cuban mothers facing threats from ex-partners have been documented within the Cuban expatriate community, where many immigrants lack institutional support networks or resources to hire private attorneys.
Pérez concluded her appeal with a direct message to potential supporters: "Every contribution, no matter how small, will have a significant impact on her life."
