As time passes, more information is emerging about a significant robbery targeting a Cuban family living in southwest Miami-Dade. Three Cuban perpetrators managed to steal nearly $360,000 in cash, the family's life savings, during a home invasion.

The incident took place shortly after 1:00 p.m. The mother had left with her youngest child to visit a nearby store, and the father was at work, leaving a 14-year-old teenager alone at home.

According to Univision 23, two of the suspects scaled a cement fence, attempted to force a window without success, and ultimately gained entry through a rear French door using a screwdriver, causing approximately $1,000 worth of damage in the process.

A third accomplice stood guard outside while the other two ransacked drawers and closets in the master bedroom on the second floor, making off with $359,400 in cash.

Meanwhile, the teenager, undetected, managed to hide and alert the police.

“He locked himself in the room, hid under the bed. They rummaged through drawers and closets, even checked mine and his...,” the mother recounted in an exclusive interview with Univision 23.

The teen's 911 call proved crucial as a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office helicopter tracked the suspects fleeing in a getaway vehicle. Officers intercepted the vehicle shortly after it departed the premises.

The three arrested individuals, identified as Pablo Arrechavaleta, 49; Leonel Alejandro Ramírez, 47; and Antonio Mesa, 47, are Cuban residents in the Miami area.

The family, visibly shaken, expressed the emotional and financial impact of the crime: “I'm nervous, upset, worried. It's normal. I just went through this. Of course, you have no peace, you feel bad.”

The husband, who works as a maintenance worker and cares for a child with special needs, faces a loss that extends beyond financial constraints.

“You save, your work, your sacrifices, you understand? All that, and then people come into your house and take everything,” lamented the woman.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Following a medical evaluation, Arrechavaleta and Mesa confessed to their roles, while Ramírez refused to answer questions. All three appeared before a judge on Wednesday facing multiple felony charges, including burglary of an occupied dwelling, third-degree grand theft, and criminal mischief. Mesa and Ramírez are also charged with possession of burglary tools.

Bail was denied for one of the charges against all three suspects.

Arrechavaleta and Ramírez face additional immigration holds and will be transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after their criminal proceedings. Mesa's bail is set at $75,001.

In Florida, burglary of an occupied dwelling is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

This incident adds to a string of high-value residential burglaries recently reported in the western and southwestern areas of Miami-Dade, regions with high concentrations of Cuban and Hispanic families.

In March 2026, two Cubans were apprehended for stealing approximately $100,000 in jewelry, watches, and cash from a home in the same sector of the county.

Despite a 28.85% decrease in residential burglaries in Miami-Dade in 2024 compared to the previous year, organized and high-value thefts remain a growing concern for authorities and locals alike.
