On Tuesday, United Airlines revealed an innovative seating configuration for its Economy Plus section that completely removes the dreaded middle seat from one row in its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This seat is replaced by a shared fixed table made from synthetic leather.
According to the airline's official statement, this table spans from armrest to armrest across the blocked seat, featuring two cup holders and offering space for working, dining, or placing personal items during the flight.
Headquartered in Chicago, United claims to be the first American airline to introduce this unique design in its premium economy class.
Who Benefits from the New Seating Arrangement?
This special configuration is advantageous for four passengers per plane—two on each side of the aisle—occupying the window and aisle seats in that row.
In addition to the extra space gained by eliminating the middle neighbor, these passengers enjoy the standard three additional inches (7.62 centimeters) of legroom that Economy Plus on the A321XLR is known for.
Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, elaborated on the scope of this change.
"The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers direct aisle access suites with lie-flat seats in United Polaris business class, but now also includes these special Economy Plus seats with more legroom and elbow space. Our customers are going to love these new options," he stated.
Pricing and Availability: What to Expect
United has yet to disclose the cost of accessing this special row.
The airline mentioned that it will announce pricing details before sales open, expected by late 2026. The first domestic flights of the A321XLR are slated for that fall, with international routes commencing in early 2027.
This new seating configuration will be available on the 50 Airbus A321XLRs that United ordered back in 2019.
Nonetheless, the company is also considering extending this design to other models within its fleet, although no specific dates or aircraft have been confirmed.
More than half of those 50 planes are expected to be operational before 2028.
The Aircraft Behind the Innovation
The A321XLR is no ordinary aircraft; with a range of up to 8,700 kilometers, it is the world's longest-range single-aisle plane, capable of crossing the Atlantic without the need for a wide-body aircraft.
United plans to primarily use it for transatlantic routes and flights to Latin America from its hubs in Newark and Washington Dulles, replacing the Boeing 757, a model from the 1980s.
Each A321XLR accommodates 150 passengers distributed across four cabins: 20 Polaris seats (business class with suites and privacy doors), 12 Premium Plus, 51 Economy Plus, and 67 standard Economy seats.
The aircraft is also equipped with Starlink's free Wi-Fi, Bluetooth-enabled entertainment screens, a snack bar at the back, and larger overhead bins.
A Strategic Move for Comfort and Profit
Aviation analysts point out that the concept of blocking the middle seat isn't new on a global scale; European airlines have been implementing it in their short-haul business class cabins for years.
What United is doing is transferring this idea to the premium economy section of a long-haul aircraft, making it an additional paid option within its revenue strategy.
There's also an operational calculation at play: by keeping the A321XLR's capacity at 150 passengers, the airline can operate with four flight attendants instead of five, which is the federal minimum requirement starting from that number of seats.
This announcement adds to United's recent efforts to enhance the onboard experience.
In March 2026, the company introduced the Relax Row, a row of three seats in its Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft that transforms into a sofa-like area for sleeping on long-haul flights, set to launch in 2027.
