Monsignor Enrique Aurelio García Rodríguez, a dedicated priest from the Diocese of Santa Clara who devoted much of his ministry to the Sancti Spíritus community, passed away on Friday at the age of 91 due to a cardiopulmonary arrest. He died at the Bishopric of Santa Clara.

The Diocese of Santa Clara announced the sorrowful news through its social media channels, sharing a message that conveyed the institution's grief: "With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Monsignor Enrique Aurelio García Rodríguez, who departed to the Father's House at 6:50 p.m. on July 10, 2026, at the Bishopric of Santa Clara, aged 91, due to a cardiopulmonary arrest."

A Life of Dedication and Service

Born on March 14, 1935, in Sancti Spíritus, Father Enrique led a unique life journey before embracing the priesthood. In his early years, he felt a calling to join the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation dedicated to Christian education that arrived in Cuba in 1905 but was expelled in 1961 by Fidel Castro's regime, which seized their schools and banned religious teaching.

However, Father Enrique's path took a different direction: he studied Accounting and worked for three decades as a Planning Accountant at the National Bank of Cuba before embracing a late yet profound vocation to the priesthood.

A Legacy of Learning and Love for Sancti Spíritus

The Diocese of Santa Clara highlighted that "his great pastime was always reading, a habit he cultivated diligently, which granted him a solid and admired culture that he shared through his pastoral work."

He was also remembered as "a great lover and passionate connoisseur of his homeland, Sancti Spíritus," where he dedicated most of his ministry within the Vicariate bearing its name, part of the Diocese of Santa Clara.

Final Farewells and Community Support

After his passing, Father Enrique's body was taken to the Parish of Our Lady of Charity of Sancti Spíritus, one of the most historic churches in Cuba, built between 1717 and 1727, considered the second erected under the patronage of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, the island's patroness.

The parish's current priest, Father Yoan Ernesto Bonet Espino, announced that the church would open its doors from 6:00 a.m. the following day to welcome the faithful, with the funeral mass scheduled for 10:00 a.m., followed by the burial.

In his statement, Bonet Espino invited the community with these words: "Let us commend Father Enrique in prayer so that the Lord may grant him eternal rest and the reward of the just."

The news prompted an outpouring of condolences among the local faithful and the broader Cuban Catholic community, mourning the loss of a beloved priest known for his closeness, culture, and love for the land of his birth.

Recent Losses in the Cuban Catholic Church

Monsignor García Rodríguez's death adds to a series of significant losses for the Catholic Church in Cuba in recent months. In June, Monsignor Silvano Pedroso Montalvo, Cuba's first Afro-descendant bishop, died at 73; in April, Bishop Jorge Enrique Serpa Pérez passed away at 84; and in December 2025, both Father José Necuze Necuze of Holguín and Monsignor Héctor Luis Peña Gómez, Holguín's first bishop, died at 96.

The Diocese of Santa Clara closed its statement with a quote from the Gospel of Matthew that encapsulates the spirit with which they bid farewell to Father Enrique: "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter into the joy of your Lord" (Matthew 25:21).
