Renowned Cuban chess Grandmaster, Jesús Nogueiras, is once again facing a distressing and infuriating situation that highlights the regime's neglect of its elite athletes once they are no longer deemed useful.
Last Friday, July 10, the esteemed chess player from Villa Clara exposed his complete abandonment, revealing that the location where he is supposed to receive daily meals denied him food due to a lack of coordination among the institutions responsible for his care.
The complaint was made during an interview with content creator Jankiel Itako, shared on TikTok, where the Grandmaster detailed his current predicament.
Nogueiras' Struggle with INDER
Nogueiras explained that INDER had authorized him to dine at La Bodeguita del Medio restaurant in Santa Clara, but the agreement was not followed up, leading the establishment to stop providing him meals.
His bitterness was evident as he recalled donating $30,000 to the Cuban government during his prime, yet now, he struggles even to secure a daily meal.
"The issue here is universal. I was given the right to a meal at La Bodeguita del Medio. However, no one followed up, and today they had no food for me. They didn't have food for the most knowledgeable chess player in Cuba who gave away $30,000," he lamented.
Indifference and Neglect
Nogueiras did not shy away from pointing fingers at those responsible and dismissed any notion that the U.S. embargo was to blame for his plight.
"Those at INDER and the Party neglect their duties, their people, those who remain here. It's disgraceful to deny someone a meal. It's not the blockade; it's the shamelessness we bring upon ourselves," he emphasized.
A Storied Career
Born in Remedios, Villa Clara, in 1959, Nogueiras has had an extraordinary career. In 1979, at just 19, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) awarded him the title of Grandmaster, making him the youngest in the world at that time, even before Garry Kasparov.
He represented Cuba in 14 Chess Olympiads between 1980 and 2004, played on the top board in seven of them, was a five-time national champion, and competed against nine world champions, including Anatoli Karpov, with whom he drew in a nearly five-hour game, later analyzed by both.
Wider Pattern of Neglect
The chess player's situation is not unique. In September 2025, sports journalist Yasel Porto highlighted Nogueiras' dire personal and mental health, describing the images he received as "shocking and alarming."
Following the viral spread of that report, Villa Clara's INDER defended itself, claiming to care for the chess player, yet the public dispute persists.
Nogueiras' case is part of a pattern seen among many Cuban sports legends. In February 2025, the Cuban government denied the abandonment of athletes, but reality tells a different story: basketball player Margarita Skeet survived with neighbors' help, boxer Mario Kindelán sold an Olympic medal to get by, and wrestler Lisset Hechavarría went from Pan-American champion to living on the streets.
As summarized by Jankiel Itako in the video, Nogueiras' demand is not excessive: "Simply to be treated well in terms of food."
