Caleb, a nine-month-old infant who suffered severe burns in a domestic accident in Santiago de Cuba, is showing remarkable recovery with no visible scars. This hopeful news comes after less than 20 days of treatment at the Burn Unit of the Juan Bruno Zayas Clinical Surgical Hospital, as shared by Pastor Darlon Bermúdez on social media.
The incident reportedly took place on June 13 on Vargas Street, right in the heart of Santiago de Cuba. The family was using charcoal to cook during one of the city's frequent and prolonged power outages.
Unfortunately, sparks from the makeshift stove ignited the high chair where Caleb was seated, engulfing him in flames.
His father heroically jumped into the fire to save him, managing to bring him out alive, though Caleb sustained burns all over his body, including his face.
"His entire body was injured, including his face. His father braved the flames to rescue him, and he succeeded. But his skin was severely damaged," Pastor Bermúdez recounted in his post.
"A huge thank you to the medical staff who provided such outstanding care," he added.
Community Support and Gratitude
Caleb's mother, Solanch Lisbet Sánchez Zamora, publicly expressed her gratitude in the comments to the doctors, nurses, and specialists in the burn unit: "To the team of doctors, nurses, and specialists in the burn unit of the Clinical Surgical Hospital, and to all the wonderful people who supported my husband and family... today my baby's recovery is thanks first to God and to all of you."
His maternal grandmother, Yaquelin Zamora Arce, also shared on social media, "Thank you, Jesus, for your work in my grandson's life, my prince [...] Thank you, Jehovah, for restoring his skin so quickly."
A family member named Yilbert Fernández described the support they received as "a spiritual embrace for our family" and thanked those who accompanied Caleb during his recovery.
Challenges Amidst a National Energy Crisis
Caleb's hospital discharge was reportedly confirmed on June 28 by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who had previously reported on the hospital's lack of supplies and the institutional pressure faced by the family to keep the incident under wraps.
This tragic accident is not an isolated event. Cuba's energy crisis forces many families to rely on charcoal or wood for cooking due to power outages in the eastern part of the country, which can last up to 45 hours consecutively.
In March 2026, President Miguel Díaz-Canel officially directed the provision of cooking materials "from charcoal to wood," effectively turning this regression into public policy. The electrical deficit reached a historical peak of 2,174 MW in May 2026, leaving 70% of the island without power simultaneously.
Santiago de Cuba has already witnessed at least six significant fires between February and May 2026, several linked to alternative cooking methods during blackouts.
The cost of a can of charcoal in the city has skyrocketed from 200 to 800 pesos, and a sack containing five cans now costs 4,000 pesos, nearly double the monthly minimum wage.
The Juan Bruno Zayas Hospital, where Caleb was treated, operates under severe limitations: in August 2025, burn patients reportedly went unattended, and in November of the same year, its morgue collapsed.
Caleb's recovery, celebrated by his family and hundreds on social media, stands in stark contrast to the challenging conditions under which the medical staff had to work to achieve it.
