Arriving in Darkness, Thriving in Joy: A Reunion Many Dream Of

Wednesday, July 8, 2026 by Abigail Marquez

A Cuban woman returned to the island amidst a blackout, capturing the moment in a video that encapsulates a feeling shared by millions: the overwhelming joy of a reunion that no power outage can diminish.

Wen, known as @wendysbilbao on TikTok, shared a nearly three-minute clip under the hashtag #malditadistancia with a telling description: "Cuba is missed." The video quickly garnered over 2,400 views and 310 likes within its first few hours online.

Her arrival was quintessentially Cuban: Wen landed just a day after the third nationwide blackout in 2026. This blackout was triggered by a failure at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant in Camagüey on a Sunday afternoon, causing a cascading disconnection that plunged the entire island's 9.6 million residents into darkness.

Yet, the absence of light did not dim the joy of her homecoming.

Wen's video surfaces during a time when surprise reunions in Cuba have become a viral sensation on TikTok, often unfolding in the dark—a unique twist possible only on the island. That Tuesday, another clip showed a mother collapsing to the floor upon her son's unexpected arrival, which also went viral.

This trend has been ongoing since the start of the year. On January 8, TikToker William López surprised his grandmother during a blackout, marking one of the early videos of this 2026 trend. On June 1, @ailetsantos documented her own arrival during a 25-hour power outage, writing, "Excuse the quality, but there was no electricity. Still, coming home to hug them is life for me." On July 4, a Cuban man's mother fell to the sidewalk in shock upon his surprise appearance, with the video exceeding 223,000 views.

The irony is truly Cuban: the country's most severe power crisis in recent memory—with a deficit exceeding 2,100 MW, outages lasting up to 87 hours in Matanzas, and an average of 15 to 24 hours daily without power in Havana—has inadvertently become the backdrop for the most heartwarming embraces.

Following Sunday's collapse, Havana's Electric Company had only restored electricity to 46% of the capital, energizing about 131 circuits upon which millions rely.

However, for Wen, these hardships paled in comparison. The hashtag says it all: #malditadistancia. Because when a heartfelt embrace finally arrives, not even the world's longest blackout can overshadow it.
