Cuban Brigadier General Alcibíades Wilmer Pérez Rivero, Former Military Intelligence Chief, Passes Away

Saturday, July 4, 2026 by Joseph Morales

Brigadier General Alcibíades Wilmer Pérez Rivero, who once led the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), passed away on Friday, as reported by an official statement from the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR). The announcement was made on the National Television News.

The statement did not disclose the general's age or the cause of death, a common practice of the Cuban regime when high-ranking military figures die.

A Legacy of Nearly Five Decades in the FAR

According to the official notification, Pérez Rivero joined the FAR in 1979 as a cadet at the José Martí Military Technical Institute, where he graduated with distinction as a radio-electronic engineer. Throughout his career, he advanced from platoon leader to commanding radio-electronic reconnaissance battalions and even taught at the General Máximo Gómez FAR Academy.

His roles included military intelligence officer, radio-electronic warfare officer, deputy chief and chief of the analysis and information department, and head of the military intelligence section in the Western Army, before becoming the deputy chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate.

“Given his performance, professionalism, and extensive experience, he was promoted to head the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Revolutionary Armed Forces,” the statement noted, highlighting the pinnacle of his career.

Education and Honors

MINFAR's statement emphasized that the general was committed to his professional development, completing the command and inter-arm operational strategic staff course at the General Máximo Gómez FAR Academy. He also attended the National Defense College, finishing with outstanding results.

His numerous accolades included the Ignacio Agramonte medals of first, second, and third class, the Combative Fraternity medal, and commemorative medals for the anniversaries of the FAR and for 10, 15, and 20 years of service.

Additionally, the statement mentioned that his achievements earned him the status of a member of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Military Honors Scheduled for Monday at the FAR Pantheon

Following his death, the general's body was cremated. His ashes will be interred on Monday, July 6, at 10 a.m. in the Pantheon of the Revolutionary Armed Forces located at the Colón Cemetery in Havana, where he will receive military honors.

This protocol, involving cremation and the deposition of ashes with military honors, was previously followed for Major General Claro Orlando Almaguel Vidal, who passed away in January of this year.

The Shrinking Military Leadership

Pérez Rivero's death is part of a series of losses among Cuba's senior military leaders and historical figures in 2026. In January, Brigadier General José Luis Mesa Delgado, aged 88, and Major General Almaguel Vidal, aged 81, passed away.

In May, Rear Admiral Roberto Eduardo González Luaces died in Cienfuegos. Additionally, on June 21, the historic commander Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, founder of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), died at 94.

This pattern of deaths underscores the rapid aging of Cuba's military leadership, a generation without an apparent successor.
