A young woman known as Grett, who goes by @grett_argil on Instagram, has brought to light a disturbing situation in Camagüey, where she claims a man with a knife has been persistently stalking her. Despite her repeated reports, she states that law enforcement has not taken effective action.
The most recent incident occurred on a Sunday morning at approximately 11:30 AM near the Puma store on República Street. According to Grett, the man brandished a knife from his backpack as she walked by.
Her friend, who was walking a short distance behind her, chose not to walk on the same side of the street and later informed her about the incident.
"Look, Grett, I didn't walk that way because just as you were passing, the man said something and pulled a knife out of his backpack," her friend recounted. Others present at the scene also confirmed seeing the weapon.
Repeated Threats in Central Camagüey
Grett revealed that this wasn't an isolated encounter. In a prior video, she recounted how the same individual had chased her and a friend with a knife around the Casino area, also in broad daylight. She reported that this man often loiters in bustling areas of central Camagüey, such as La Salsa, the Caribe, the Casino, and República Street, typically targeting women who refuse to give him money.
Following the latest incident, Grett went to the National Revolutionary Police station on Avellaneda Street to file a complaint. However, she described the response as slow and inefficient.
Police Inaction Raises Public Outcry
Despite witnesses and the alleged assailant being nearby, officers reportedly told her to wait her turn. Due to a malfunctioning computer system, her complaint had to be handwritten, stretching the process to over five hours.
“In the end, they said they would issue a warning letter to him,” Grett recounted. By then, the man had already left the area. When Grett expressed that he posed a danger to others, an officer allegedly dismissed her concerns, suggesting she only saw him everywhere because he asked her for money.
“That was the result of spending more than five hours at a police station to report this,” Grett lamented, emphasizing that the man is truly dangerous and not just someone with mental health issues.
Social Media Amplifies the Alarm
Grett's story quickly gained traction on social media, shared by independent journalist José L. Tan Estrada, who issued a warning to Camagüey residents.
“This is the guy who goes around stalking, attacking, and threatening people with a knife in Camagüey, mainly targeting women, often on República Street. Numerous complaints have been lodged against this creep, yet the police do nothing,” the journalist posted on Facebook.
Following this, dozens of users recounted similar experiences with the same man in various central city locations, including near the Casino, Maceo Street, the Triana Bridge, and the recreation area in front of the Asociación Hermanos Saíz headquarters.
One commenter claimed that the man “lifts his shirt to reveal a knife” to intimidate even in areas frequented by children. Another suggested, without evidence, that the man might be suffering from untreated paranoid schizophrenia.
Rising Crime Concerns in Cuba
The incident unfolds amid growing concerns over public safety in Cuba. According to the Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory, 2,833 confirmed crimes were reported in 2025, a 115% increase from 2024 and a 337% rise compared to 2023.
Camagüey has also experienced recent violent incidents involving knives. In April, a woman was critically injured in a stabbing near the Railroad Terminal, marking the second such attack in the area within a week.
Hours after her initial report, Grett noted another incident involving the same man, advising city residents to remain vigilant.
