Florida has witnessed one of the steepest increases in fatal accidents attributed to road rage across the United States, as highlighted by a recent study conducted by Grigor Law Injury & Car Accident Lawyers. This analysis, utilizing data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, spans the period from 2020 to 2024.

The number of fatal crashes linked to road rage in Florida escalated from 12 incidents in 2023 to 36 in 2024, marking a staggering 200% rise in just one year.

"Florida experienced the second-largest year-over-year increase in deadly road rage accidents in the nation: fatalities climbed from 12 in 2023 to 36 in 2024, a 200% surge," the study concluded.

Wyoming was the only state to surpass Florida in percentage terms, with a 300% increase, albeit with significantly lower absolute numbers, escalating from one to four fatal crashes in the same timeframe.

Texas ranked third, witnessing an 83.33% rise in road rage-related deaths, increasing from six cases in 2023 to 11 in 2024.

States with Highest Fatalities

In terms of absolute numbers, Florida still trails behind other states. Colorado leads with 130 fatal road rage incidents in 2024, up from 120 the previous year, an 8.33% uptick.

Alabama recorded 94 deaths in 2024 compared to 74 in 2023, a rise of 27.03%, while South Carolina noted 56 fatalities, just one more than the prior year.

Deep-Rooted Issues in Florida

The problem in Florida is entrenched. Since 2014, the state has topped the nation in road rage incidents involving firearms. Miami and Tampa are among the most hazardous metropolitan areas for such armed confrontations.

In 2024, South Florida reported several road rage shootings, including incidents on I-95, in Doral near Miami International Airport, on SR-826 where a child was injured, and in Boca Raton.

The situation is particularly alarming in Miami-Dade: in the early months of 2026 alone, the county reported 93 accidents and 117 victims, with pedestrian hit-and-runs surging by more than 50% from 2020 to 2024.

Challenges and National Trends

Compounding the issue is a staffing crisis within the Florida Highway Patrol, hampering effective response to these incidents. In May 2025, a member of their advisory council warned, "There's a lot of speeding and road rage, but not enough officers to handle it."

Nationally, road rage incidents have spiked by 500% over the past decade, with 37% of aggressive driving cases involving firearms.

In 2024, an overwhelming 96% of American drivers reported witnessing at least one road rage incident in the previous six months.

The behaviors most aggravating drivers include distracted driving (27.7%), tailgating (21.4%), and being cut off in traffic (15.6%).
