On Saturday, a tragic accident occurred in Loma de Boquerón, Yateras, Guantánamo, involving an overturned electric tricycle that resulted in the death of a woman and left at least three others injured, including a child.
The victim has been identified as Isis Faure Vivas, a nurse at the Guantánamo Maternity Home, according to journalist Miguel Reyes.
The injured minor was taken to the Pedro Agustín Pérez Children's Hospital in Guantánamo for medical care, as reported by Reyes on social media.
So far, official information regarding the number of victims or the causes of the accident has not been released by authorities.
Preliminary reports from journalist Carlos Pérez suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn on that stretch of road.
Emergency response teams, including the Cuban Red Cross, SIUM, police, and local health services, quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and secure the area. Images shared online show multiple ambulances parked along the rural road as medical and rescue personnel attended to the victims.
Isis Faure Vivas was well-regarded at the Maternity Home in Guantánamo for her compassionate and calm demeanor with expectant mothers. Those who knew her describe her as a professional whose presence was enough to ease the worries of anxious patients, noted journalist Miguel Reyes in announcing her passing.
"At the Guantánamo Maternity Home, she was more than just a nurse. She was a shelter, a guide, that invisible hand offering support when everything seemed fragile," emphasized Reyes, who knew her personally.
"For her son and family, the pain is beyond words... it's not just a mother that's been lost, but an entire world contained within one person," expressed Reyes in an emotional tribute. "Today, sadness is mixed with gratitude because her time in this world left a profound impact. Her legacy lives on in the lives she helped bring into the world, the families she supported, and the friends who mourn her with broken hearts. Although the sorrow is immense, so is the legacy of love she leaves behind."
The accident comes amidst a significant decline in road safety in Cuba. In 2025, the country saw 7,538 traffic accidents resulting in 750 deaths and 6,718 injuries, according to data from the National Road Safety Commission. Motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians were involved in 63% of recorded incidents.
A report released last October indicated that electric tricycles and motorcycles accounted for 52% of road accidents, 32% of fatalities, and 42% of injuries. These vehicles have become a popular means of transportation due to the fuel crisis, but their use in hilly areas poses an additional risk due to their technical specifications.
