Who Really is Despingovery Chanel? The Story Behind the Comedian as Told by His Wife

Daniela Escarra, the wife of Cuban comedian Eduardo "Eddy" Ceballos, took to Facebook to unveil the real person behind the viral persona Despingovery Channel, as her husband is currently incarcerated in Cuba facing a potential 30-year sentence.

"To many of you, he is Despingovery Chanel, the content creator who has made you laugh countless times. But do you know who is behind that name?" Daniela began her post with this question.

Daniela shared that behind the character is a 38-year-old man, a graduate of the School of Art Instructors, who spent more than half his life with the National Circus of Cuba. In recent years, he dedicated himself entirely to comedy, using social media as his stage. He has showcased his talent in over 13 countries.

"Eddy is a well-educated, hardworking man, a husband, father, and artist. He has built his career with effort and dedication," Daniela emphasized, highlighting that there is a human being behind the persona.

She lamented, "Today, that voice that brought smiles to so many is silenced, while he endures a situation that has drastically altered his family's life."

Daniela implores Eddy's supporters to join the campaign for his release: "Do not be indifferent. Get informed, listen to his story, share this message, and help us ensure his voice is not silenced. Every person who shares, comments, or discusses this case helps keep hope alive."

Ceballos was arrested on June 1st during a police operation in the Diez de Octubre municipality in Havana. The officers did not allow him to enter his home or notify his wife.

The catalyst for his arrest was a May 24th video teaser of what he called his "most warlike episode", featuring an abandoned military installation with Soviet missiles from the 60s, radars, and Cold War bunkers, which garnered 68,000 views before his arrest.

Initially, the authorities informed the family of a charge of "invasion of military property," but Cubalex pointed out that such an offense does not exist in Cuba's current penal codes, labeling the arrest a "blatant violation of the principle of legality."

The case escalated to a charge of "revealing secrets concerning State Security," a charge that can be processed by a military tribunal with sentences of up to 30 years in prison.

For his mother, Marieta Pérez Alfaro, the change in charges has no other explanation than the regime's desire to silence him. "The act of taking this to extreme levels, accusing him of espionage, confirms they want to silence him, to use him as an example," she asserted.

Ceballos had anticipated his arrest, recording a preventive video with instructions to make it public if he were detained: "If you are watching this video, it unfortunately means I have been imprisoned, separated from my home, my family, my daughter, once again revealing the true nature of the Cuban government."

Alongside the legal pressure, other allegations emerged. On June 17th, the young man's mother revealed that her son had been physically assaulted while in custody, describing the prison as "the anteroom of hell, a place of great suffering."

The cameraman who collaborated with Ceballos on the military installation video was also detained by State Security, according to the family, though the charges against him remain unknown.

This case forms part of a documented pattern of repression against digital creators.

Cuba ranks 160th out of 180 countries in the 2026 Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, and the Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression recorded 1,188 violations of freedom of expression in 2025, a 54.7% increase over the previous year.
