A man was apprehended on Friday for the fatal attack on a citizen in the Barranca area of Bayamo municipality, located in Granma province, as reported by the social media account "Entérate con Aytana Alama."

According to the post, the victim succumbed to multiple machete-inflicted wounds during a personal altercation. The weapon was subsequently recovered by officers from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT).

Details of the Crime and Apprehension

The official account condemned the incident, describing it as a "tragic event" in which a person lost their life in Barranca, Bayamo municipality, following a personal dispute that escalated into a deadly assault.

The report highlighted the vicious nature of the attack, stating that "the brutality of this crime, carried out with a bladed weapon to cause fatal injuries, reveals a disturbing disregard for human life and a shocking lack of self-control."

The perpetrator has been captured, and, according to the same source, "the individual responsible is now in police custody."

Social Media Reactions: Condemnation and Justification

The post sparked a heated debate among social media users, highlighting the deepening security crisis on the island.

Some commenters noted previous conflicts. One user mentioned, "Neighbors say he had been robbed several times, losing clothes, money, and even having containers defiled by the criminals." However, these claims come solely from social media users and have not been independently verified.

Other comments justified the extreme violence given the perceived impunity within the Cuban penal system: "If the victim stole, assaulted, violated, or threatened the attacker or their family... vigilante justice is well received... the law and prison system do not satisfy the thirst for justice."

Most reactions, however, expressed concern over the deteriorating social environment: "The streets in Cuba today belong to criminals, murderers, and thieves... it's no longer safe to walk," one user wrote. "The level of violence we're experiencing is terrifying. We don't even feel safe in our own homes," another added.

Bayamo: A Hotspot for Violent Crimes

This incident is not an isolated occurrence in Bayamo. In April 2026, Yunia Lisset Bizet Sánchez was murdered in the city while on her way to report her attacker to the police. In May 2025, 21-year-old Jesús Bejerano was fatally stabbed in the Latinoamericano neighborhood, with his family attempting to lynch the assailant.

In Granma province, a nine-year-old girl was brutally murdered by a neighbor in Grito de Yara in June 2025, one of the most shocking crimes recorded in Cuba that year.

The rise of "vigilante justice" has paralleled the decline in public security. Residents have taken to capturing and restraining suspected criminals in various cities, amid widespread perceptions of ineffective law enforcement.

The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC) documented 1,319 verified crimes from January to June 2025, nearly five times more than the same period in 2023, with an average of 7.3 crimes per day. According to OCAC data cited by Infobae, Cuba saw a 115% increase in crime rates in 2025 compared to the previous year.

The "Entérate con Aytana Alama" account concluded its post with a poignant message: "Crossing the line into extreme physical violence to settle a grievance is not justice; it is an act of barbarism that destroys entire families."
