Thursday, June 25, 2026 by Daniel Vasquez

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Colombia has officially declared Abelardo De La Espriella as the president-elect for the 2026-2030 term. This announcement followed the conclusion of the official count of the presidential runoff held on June 21.

According to BluRadio's report on the official CNE tally, De La Espriella secured victory over his opponent, Iván Cepeda, the Historical Pact candidate and political protégé of the outgoing president, Gustavo Petro, by a margin of 251,854 votes.

The National Scrutinizing Commission announced the results, stating: "Dr. Abelardo de la Espriella is declared elected as President of the Republic of Colombia for the term 2026-2030 by the Defenders of the Homeland Party. Dr. José Manuel Restrepo Abondano is declared Vice President for the same term by the Defenders of the Homeland Movement or Group."

Detailed Election Results

The final count showed minor differences from the initial tally: De La Espriella gained an additional 624 votes, totaling 12,960,166 ballots (49.66%), while Cepeda lost 400, ending with 12,708,312 votes (48.70%).

The total number of votes counted reached 26,344,960, with a 99.9% match between the preliminary and official counts, ruling out any significant impact on the results.

Reactions to the Election Outcome

Cepeda conceded defeat on election day, describing his acknowledgment as a gesture of democratic responsibility. Martha Bolívar, representing the Historical Pact, formally withdrew all challenges during the counting process.

In contrast, Petro refused to acknowledge the results and criticized the president-elect on social media. "The U.S. citizenship status of President Abelardo takes us back two and a half centuries: to the viceroyalty," he posted on his X account. He also criticized the electoral system, claiming, "We have never had a more vulnerable electoral system, serving one of the candidates."

The European Observation Mission, led by Esteban González Pons, dismissed any allegations of electoral data manipulation, countering the outgoing president's accusations.

Background and Policy Proposals of the President-Elect

De La Espriella, a criminal lawyer and businessman with permanent residency in the United States, lacks prior experience in public office. He leads the hard-right movement "Defenders of the Homeland," established in 2025, and is an outspoken admirer of Donald Trump, who endorsed his campaign and congratulated him on his victory, promising a second Plan Colombia with U.S. military support. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also extended his congratulations on De La Espriella's election.

Among the president-elect's significant proposals for the region are severing diplomatic ties with Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, and suggesting that Cuba become a U.S. Commonwealth, similar to Puerto Rico.

As the defeated candidate with more than 25% of the valid votes, Iván Cepeda is entitled to a seat in the Senate of the Republic, according to Article 112 of the Colombian Constitution, and his vice-presidential running mate will have a seat in the House.

De La Espriella will assume the presidency on August 7, 2026, marking the end of Gustavo Petro's four-year tenure as Colombia's first leftist president.
