Croatia Secures 1-0 Victory Over Panama, Earns First Points at 2026 World Cup

On Tuesday, Croatia achieved a 1-0 win against Panama at Toronto's BMO Field during the second matchday of Group L in the 2026 World Cup. Ante Budimir's decisive goal in the 54th minute clinched the victory for the European team, securing their initial three points in the tournament.

The first half was uneventful, with both teams struggling to create significant offensive opportunities. During halftime, Croatia's coach, Zlatko Dalić, decided to make strategic changes by substituting Petar Musa and Josip Gvardiol for Budimir and Andrej Kramarić, respectively, in the 46th minute.

The tactical shift paid off swiftly. Just nine minutes into the second half, Budimir capitalized on a cross from the right flank, positioning himself perfectly at the far post to score the game's only goal.

Panama failed to mount a comeback, ending the match with a single shot, none on target, compared to Croatia's two attempts, including the crucial goal. The possession statistics further illustrated Croatia's dominance, holding 64% of the ball compared to Panama's 36%.

Panama's Yoel Bárcenas received a yellow card in the 61st minute, and Croatia's Petar Sucic was similarly cautioned during stoppage time. In what might have been one of his final group-stage World Cup appearances, Luka Modrić exited the field in the 81st minute, making way for Mario Pasalic.

This defeat eliminates Panama from the 2026 World Cup, with no points from their first two matches and a scoreline of zero goals for and two against. This marks the second consecutive World Cup where the Central American team has failed to earn a point, following their debut in Russia 2018.

Conversely, Croatia climbs to three points, positioning themselves third in Group L as the "best third-placed team" with a chance to progress to the next round. On the same day, England and Ghana played to a goalless draw at Boston's Gillette Stadium, securing four points each and confirming their advancement as the top two teams in the group.

The current standings are: England (4 points), Ghana (4 points), Croatia (3 points), and Panama (0 points).

The third and final matchday will take place on Saturday, June 27. Croatia will face Ghana at Lincoln Financial Field, while Panama concludes their World Cup campaign against England at MetLife Stadium.
